Biofouling occlusion of ships' internal seawater systems: operational, economic, and biosecurity consequences

Ian Davidson et al.

Summary: Biofouling in ships' internal seawater systems can lead to significant operational issues and potential spread of nonindigenous species. This study assessed the impacts of biofouling occlusion in different nodes of the systems on commercial ship performance using an engine room simulator and economic evaluation. The results showed that the systems could tolerate up to 55% occlusion in a single node without operational impact, but deterioration rapidly occurred beyond this level. The magnitude of impacts varied depending on the node and ambient seawater temperatures, and simultaneous occlusion of multiple nodes had a much lower system tolerance. The economic consequences included freight rate increases and potential ship slowdowns.

Biofilm formation under high shear stress increases resilience to chemical and mechanical challenges

L. C. Simoes et al.

Summary: The study found that biofilms formed under different hydrodynamic conditions showed different structural characteristics, with those formed under higher shear stress being more tolerant to chemical and mechanical stresses. Sodium hypochlorite was the most effective biocide for killing and removing biofilms.

Impact of phosphate concentration on the metabolome of biofilms of the marine bacterium Pseudoalteromonas lipolytica

Nathan Carriot et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of a gradient of phosphate concentrations on the biofilm-forming capacity and metabolome of the marine bacterium Pseudoalteromonas lipolytica TC8. The results showed that lower phosphate concentrations led to decreased biomass, carbohydrate content, and three-dimensional structures of biofilms. Untargeted metabolomics revealed differences in metabolites at different phosphate concentrations, with ornithine lipids increasing and oxidized phosphatidylethanolamines decreasing as phosphate concentration decreased.

Kahina Djaoudi et al.

Summary: This study reveals the influence of copper levels in seawater on the biofilms and metal adsorption on microplastics. The research found that copper-enriched seawater can shape biofilm communities, with diatoms playing a crucial role. The biofilms formed at the most contaminated site exhibited higher metal accumulation.

The Resilience of Biofilm-Bound Sandy Systems to Cyclic Changes in Shear Stress

Xindi Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different depositional histories on sand-attached benthic biofilms in aquatic environments. The results show that biostabilization is disturbance-stimulated, contrary to previous beliefs. Intensively disturbed bio-sandy beds exhibit a more rapid increase in bed strength and stability. The findings have implications for the understanding of the role of biofilms as ecosystem engineers.

The role of shear dynamics in biofilm formation

Erifyli Tsagkari et al.

Summary: There is evidence that individual bacteria can sense and respond to changes in mechanical loading. However, the specific responses of multispecies biofilms to dynamic fluid shear stress have not been well documented. In this study, the development of biofilms in drinking water on flow channel walls was observed under different flow regimes. The results showed that the dynamics of shear stress played a significant role in promoting biofilm development, beyond just the magnitude or mass transfer effects. This finding suggests that mechanosensing may be important in complex multispecies biofilms and could lead to new ways of controlling biofilm structure.

Experimental study of two kinds of hard marine growth effects on the hydrodynamic behavior of a cylinder submitted to wave and current loading

A. Marty et al.

Summary: The presence of marine growth increases the diameter and roughness of submarine structures, resulting in increased hydrodynamic loading. Experimental studies on two types of hard roughness (mussels and corals) were conducted and it was found that the hydrodynamic coefficients of the colonized structures were up to 4 times higher than those of a reference cylinder. Standardizing the inertia and drag coefficients using different specific diameters can simplify the estimation of forces applied on the system.

The results showed that the eukaryotic biofouling community diversity and structure varied depending on primers pairs, reference databases, and sites. Both 18S rDNA and COI markers were found to be useful in future metabarcoding investigations, but databases need to be completed for better identification of biofouling eukaryotes.
