Spirolides in Bivalve Mollusk of the Galician (NW Spain) Coast: Interspecific, Spatial, Temporal Variation and Presence of an Isomer of 13-Desmethyl Spirolide C

Summary: The presence and concentration of spirokides in bivalve mollusk in Galicia were studied from 2014 to 2021. Only 13-desmethyl spirolide C and an isomer were detected, and their concentrations were always low. The mussel species had the highest accumulation of spirolides, while the isomer was mainly found in cockle, clam, and two clam species. The levels of 13-desmethyl spirolide C were highest in autumn-winter, while the levels of its isomer were highest in spring-summer. Both compounds showed a decreasing trend over the study period. Geographically, the concentration tended to decrease from southern to northeastern locations, but temporal variability was more significant than spatial variability.

LC-MS/MS Analysis of Cyanotoxins in Bivalve Mollusks-Method Development, Validation and First Evidence of Occurrence of Nodularin in Mussels (Mytilus edulis) and Oysters (Magallana gigas) from the West Coast of Sweden

Summary: A LC-MS/MS method was developed for the simultaneous identification and quantification of cyanotoxins in edible bivalves. The method successfully detected and resolved two previously detected cyanotoxin congeners separately. The method showed limitations for certain cyanotoxins but overall was specific and robust for the parameters investigated. The method was applied to analyze mussel and oyster samples collected along the Swedish coast, and the results can contribute to future regulatory monitoring for cyanotoxins to ensure seafood safety.

Summary: Blooms of the benthic toxic dinoflagellate genus Ostreopsis have been increasing in frequency in warm temperate areas such as the Mediterranean Sea. These blooms can have deleterious effects on ecosystems and impact human health. A recent investigation on the French Basque coast found the presence of new health risks due to the blooms of Ostreopsis species, possibly related to climate change.

Chemodiversity of Brevetoxins and Other Potentially Toxic Metabolites Produced by Karenia spp. and Their Metabolic Products in Marine Organisms

Summary: This review summarizes the available knowledge since 1977 on over 130 potentially toxic metabolites originating from dinoflagellate species belonging to the genus Karenia or metabolized by marine organisms. The work also aims to clarify the different nomenclatures used in the literature and harmonize practices in the future.

An occurrence of neurotoxic shellfish poisoning by consumption of gastropods contaminated with brevetoxins

Summary: Brevetoxins were confirmed in urine specimens from patients diagnosed with neurotoxic shellfish poisoning after consuming gastropods harvested from an area previously affected by a Karenia brevis bloom. The gastropods and clam from the implicated area were found to be contaminated with brevetoxins, with levels capable of causing NSP in consumers. This study demonstrates the need to better assess and communicate the risk of NSP to gastropod harvesters in Karenia brevis endemic areas.

In situ use of bivalves and passive samplers to reveal water contamination by microcystins along a freshwater-marine continuum in France

Summary: The study found that the transfer of microcystins (MCs) mainly occurs at estuarine sites along a freshwater-to-marine continuum river, and may be episodic. Tetrodotoxins in French Bivalve Mollusks-Analytical Methodology, Environmental Dynamics and Screening of Bacterial Strain Collections

Monitoring the Emergence of Algal Toxins in Shellfish: First Report on Detection of Brevetoxins in French Mediterranean Mussels

Summary: In France, four groups of lipophilic toxins are currently regulated, but emerging toxins, such as brevetoxins, have been detected through the EMERGTOX monitoring program. Brevetoxins were first detected in French Mediterranean mussels in 2018 and have been regularly found since then, potentially linked to the presence of certain species like Karenia and raphidophytes. Further investigations are needed to understand the origin of these toxins.

Guidance Level for Brevetoxins in French Shellfish

To address health risks associated with consumption of BTX-contaminated shellfish, a working group was established by the French Anses to propose guidance levels for BTXs in shellfish.
