Evolutionary differentiation of androgen receptor is responsible for sexual characteristic development in a teleost fish

Yukiko Ogino et al.

Summary: Teleost fishes exhibit complex sexual characteristics in response to androgens, such as fin enlargement and courtship display. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying their evolutionary acquisition remain largely unknown. This study shows that androgen receptor ohnologs in medaka appear to have diverged in their roles for regulating morphological and behavioural sexual characteristics after loss from an ancestral role in spermatogenesis.

Epigenetic Transgenerational Modifications Induced by Xenobiotic Exposure in Zebrafish

Luis Terrazas-Salgado et al.

Summary: This review discusses the advantages of using zebrafish as an experimental animal model to study transgenerational epigenetic processes upon exposure to xenobiotics. The focus is on DNA methylation, with additional discussion on post-translational modifications of histones and non-coding RNAs related to xenobiotic exposure in zebrafish. The revision of methods used to study epigenetic changes in zebrafish reveals their relevance and reproducibility in epigenetics-related research.

Summary: This study used DNA methylation-sensitive RAD sequencing (Methyl-RAD) to explore the epigenetic differences between adult male and female samples of Ussuri catfish in brain and gonad tissues. The researchers identified a large number of differential DNA methylation sites and genes, including genes related to sex determination. These findings provide evidence for understanding the relationship between gene regulation, epigenetics, and sex differentiation in the Ussuri catfish.

Regulation of DNA methylation during the testicular development of Shaziling pigs

Yang Anqi et al.

Summary: This study generated a DNA methylome and transcriptome atlas of precocious porcine testicular tissues, providing insights into the dynamic regulatory mechanisms of DNA methylation during testicular development. The results showed a direct relationship between dynamic methylation patterns and the expression of the DNMT3A gene. Promoter methylation was found to negatively regulate 3' UTR methylation. Additionally, decreased promoter methylation affected the upregulation of meiosis-related genes, while demethylation in the 3' UTR led to the downregulation of the INHBA gene. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the regulatory mechanisms of DNA methylation in testicular development.

Genetic and epigenetic regulation of growth, reproduction, disease resistance and stress responses in aquaculture

Zhanjiang Liu et al.

Summary: Significant progress has been made in understanding the genetic and epigenetic regulation of important aquaculture traits such as growth, reproduction, disease resistance, and stress responses. DNA methylation is found to be correlated with down-regulation of gene expression, and different levels of methylation are associated with different traits. The environmental regulation of aquaculture traits is mediated through epigenetic regulation, which may also be transgenerationally inherited, although further evidence is needed.
