Improving efficiency of methods for hatchery production of the limpet Patella candei (Patellogastropoda: Patellidae)

Diego Castejon et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the optimization of larval production methodologies for Patella candei through laboratory culture conditions. The results show that NH4OH at pH 9.0 for 20-30 minutes is the optimal method for enhancing the artificial maturation of oocytes. The larviculture method described herein is efficient and does not negatively affect larval development, while the rearing density has minimal influence on survival and development.

Advancements towards restoration of the endangered limpet Patella ferruginea Gmelin, 1791 through controlled reproduction

Maria Paola Ferranti et al.

Summary: This study describes for the first time the successful spawning induction in P. ferruginea and the larval development of the species. The fertilization rate in these events was high, and settlement ability was reached at 3-4 days after fertilization, but metamorphosis occurred between 7 and 32 days with considerable variability.

Limpet larvae (Patella aspera Roding, 1798), obtained by gonad dissection and fecundation in vitro, settled and metamorphosed on crustose coralline algae

Diego Castejon et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the early life of the limpet Patella aspera and discovered the factors that influence its settlement and metamorphosis. The results showed that viable larvae can be produced from dissected gametes, and the presence of crustose coralline algae promotes settlement and increases the ratio of juveniles.

Enhancing oocyte maturation and fertilisation in the black-foot limpet Patella candei d'Orbigny, 1840 (Patellidae, Mollusca)

Jose M. Canizares et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of NaOH-alkalinized seawater baths on the artificial maturation and fertilisation success of Patella candei oocytes, finding that optimal conditions for larval production were a pH of 9.5, activation time between 2 and 3 hours, and fertilisation time of 24:00 hours. Refrigeration was also found to help maintain oocyte viability over time. Further research is needed to explore this potential for aquaculture production.

Taxonomic revision of the Peyssonneliales (Rhodophyta): Circumscribing the authentic Peyssonnelia clade and proposing four new genera and seven new species

Edilene Maria dos Santos Pestana et al.

Summary: The Peyssonneliaceae is the only family in the order Peyssonneliales, encompassing widespread red encrusting algae. Through molecular phylogenies and morphological analyses, a revised taxonomic scheme for the Peyssonneliales has been proposed, uncovering underestimated diversity in Brazilian red algae.

Summary: This study investigated the settlement preferences of different CCA species for Acropora cytherea and found that a CCA species with a unique microbiome and metabolome significantly promoted the settlement of Acropora cytherea on its surface, with settlement preferences related to the source habitat of the CCA.
