Behavioural plasticity in the use of a neritic foraging area by loggerhead sea turtles: insights from 37 years of capture-mark-recapture in the Adriatic Sea (Mediterranean Sea)

Giulia Baldi et al.

Summary: Assessing sea turtle movements and connectivity is crucial for conservation. In the Adriatic Sea, 311 capture-mark-recapture records of loggerhead turtles from 1984 to 2021 were analyzed. The results indicate a general fidelity pattern to subareas in the Adriatic and a substantial connectivity with nesting sites in Greece. This study highlights the value of cooperation and shows the main behavioral pattern of fidelity to neritic foraging grounds.

Hidden demographic impacts of fishing and environmental drivers of fecundity in a sea turtle population

Michael J. Roast et al.

Summary: Fisheries bycatch poses a serious threat to sea turtle populations worldwide, especially due to their vulnerability to various fishing gear. In the intensely fished region of the Canary Current, the Cabo Verde loggerhead turtle population lacks a comprehensive assessment integrating bycatch and population management information. By analyzing subpopulation data from Boa Vista Island in Cabo Verde, the study evaluated population viability, estimated regional bycatch rates, and examined nesting trends in relation to bycatch estimates, hatchery conservation measures, and environmental variability. The results indicated that current bycatch mortality rates would lead to the near extinction of the Boa Vista subpopulation, highlighting the urgent need for bycatch reduction efforts and diversified conservation management strategies.

Dietary Preferences of Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta caretta) in Two Mediterranean Feeding Grounds: Does Prey Selection Change with Habitat Use throughout Their Life Cycle?

Giulia Mariani et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the gastrointestinal contents of 150 loggerhead sea turtles stranded and/or bycaught along the Italian coasts to assess the most common prey phyla. The study highlights the need for a deeper understanding of the feeding ecology and distribution of sea turtles at different developmental stages.

Voluntary fishing logbooks are essential for unveiling unsustainable bycatch levels and appropriate mitigating measures: The case of sea turtles in the Gulf of Manfredonia, Adriatic Sea

Giulia Baldi et al.

Summary: The high levels of turtle bycatch, particularly of loggerhead sea turtles, in the Mediterranean Sea pose a significant threat to the affected population. The study reveals a strong seasonality in turtle bycatch, with most captures occurring from November to March in shallow waters. Therefore, a seasonal approach and the urgent implementation of turtle excluder devices are recommended.

Foraging Habits of Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the Northwestern Gulf of Mexico

Lyndsey N. Howell et al.

Summary: The study conducted a comprehensive long-term assessment of green turtle diets from carcasses salvaged along the Texas coast from 1987 to 2014. It was found that smaller green turtles primarily feed on macroalgae while larger individuals mainly consume inshore seagrasses, with animal matter also being frequently ingested. The recovering green turtle assemblage in Texas is showing foraging plasticity within seagrass meadows, adapting to changing species composition and density.

Dietary analysis of two sympatric marine turtle species in the eastern Mediterranean

Josie L. Palmer et al.

Summary: Dietary studies of stranded and bycaught loggerhead and green turtles in North Cyprus revealed that loggerhead turtles are predominantly carnivorous, with a particular preference for sponges, while green turtles primarily consume seagrasses and macroalgae. As size increases, consumption of sponge and Halophila stipulacea decreases for loggerhead and green turtles respectively, with green turtles showing an increase in seagrass consumption.
