Trace element concentrations, including Cd and Hg, in long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas edwardii) mass stranded on the New Zealand coast

A. Lischka et al.

Summary: The study quantified trace element concentrations in tissues of Southern Hemisphere long-finned pilot whales in New Zealand, finding a positive correlation between selenium and Cd/Hg in whale tissues, indicating selenium's role in detoxification. Arrow squids were identified as a major source of trace element uptake by the whales, based on significant correlation for Hg between squid tissue and whale tissue.

Trophic ecology drives trace element concentrations in the Antarctic octopod community

A. Lischka et al.

Summary: Despite the pristine environment of the Antarctic Ocean, elevated trace element concentrations have been reported in many marine organisms, including Antarctic octopods. This study investigated the trace element concentrations in relation to the trophic ecology in eight different species of Antarctic octopods near Elephant Island. The results suggest that trace element concentrations vary among species and with sampling depth, reflecting their trophic ecology and providing insight into their contamination state in this vulnerable habitat.
