Quantifying the influence of magmatism and tectonism on ultraslow-spreading-ridge hydrothermal activity: Evidence from the Southwest Indian Ridge

Xing Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the development of hydrothermal activity in the western and eastern areas of the Southwest Indian Ridge and found that tectonic activity is the primary controlling factor, while magmatic activity has a secondary influence, even in areas with robust magma supply. These findings provide valuable insights into the formation mechanisms of hydrothermal activity and support resource prospecting in mid-ocean ridges.

Source rock with high abundance of C28 regular sterane in typical brackish-saline lacustrine sediments: Biogenic source, depositional environment and hydrocarbon generation potential in Junggar Basin, China

Shiju Liu et al.

Summary: In the Lucaogou Formation shale in the Jimusaer Sag of the Junggar Basin, organic geochemical and petrological analyses revealed that the source rocks are mainly composed of two types of maceral - lamalginite and telalginite. Both macerals have good hydrocarbon-generating potential, but in the lower thermal evolution stage, telalginite has a higher hydrocarbon-generating rate.

Petrological and organic geochemical characteristics of the Permian Lucaogou Formation in the Jimsar Sag, Junggar Basin, NW China: Implications on the relationship between hydrocarbon accumulation and volcanic-hydrothermal activities

Ziyuan Meng et al.

Summary: This study examines the lithological and organic geochemical characteristics of the middle Permian Lucaogou Formation in the Junggar Basin, NW China. The rocks deposited in an intracontinental lacustrine environment with multiple volcanic-hydrothermal activities, and the complex micro scale lithological characteristics restrict the understanding and further exploration and development of tight oil. The research provides insights into the influence of volcanic-hydrothermal activities on lithology and organic matter enrichment, offering a potential scheme for the tight oil exploration and development in similar rifted geological settings.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of hydrothermal activity on the enrichment of organic matter in lacustrine shales through an analysis of the Middle Permian Lucaogou Formation (LCGF) in the Jimusar Sag, Northwest China. The results show that hydrothermal activity enhances organic matter production and leads to its enrichment in the studied sediments.

Study on the origin and hydrocarbon generation potential of lacustrine organic-rich dolomite affected by volcanism: A case study of Lucaogou Formation in the Malang Sag, Santanghu Basin, Western China

Yongshuai Pan et al.

Summary: Through a comprehensive analysis of mineralogical and geochemical data, the origin of the organic-rich dolomites in the Lucaogou Formation of the Santanghu Basin was studied. The dolomites were found to be the result of penecontemporaneous, burial, and hydrothermal dolomitization processes. The dolomites showed evidence of metasomatism, burial dolomitization, and higher formation temperature. The dolomites were found to have a high potential for hydrocarbon generation, with abundant organically-rich material and favorable maturity levels.

Origin of microbial-hydrothermal bedded dolomites in the Permian Lucaogou Formation lacustrine shales, Junggar Basin, NW China

Anbin Wu et al.

Summary: This study discovered a new type of dolomite from the Permian Lucaogou Formation in the Junggar Basin, northwest China, and revealed its microbial-hydrothermal origin and geological significance. The study indicated that the formation of bedded dolomite is related to a mixed source of hydrothermal fluids and lake waters, and the combination of microbial and hydrothermal activity overcame the limitations of dolomitization. In terms of geological significance, the tectonic setting and paleoclimate play important roles in the deposition of dolomites and shales.

Methanogen microfossils and methanogenesis in Permian lake deposits

Funing Sun et al.

Summary: This study reports a new population of spheroidal microstructures composed of dolomite in Permian lake deposits in northwestern China, interpreted as fossilized cells of methanogenic archaea. The microfossil-bearing dolomite exhibits extremely positive delta C-13 values attributed to microbial methanogenesis, suggesting that methanogens were a significant component of the Permian lake biosphere and produced a large amount of biogenic methane through methanogenesis in anoxic lake sediments. This study not only fills a gap in the fossil record of methanogenic archaea, but also provides new insights into methane emissions from ancient lakes.

Organic petrology and geochemistry of Lower Cretaceous lacustrine sediments in the Chaoyang Basin (Liaoning Province, northeast China): Influence of volcanic ash on algal productivity and oil shale formation

Li Li et al.

Summary: The study shows that in the Lower Cretaceous Jiufotang Formation in western Liaoning Province, the volcanic ash plays a key role in algal productivity and organic-rich oil shale formation, while the large amount of volcanic ash can lead to water poisoning and mass mortality of some aquatic organisms. The organic matter mainly comes from algal productivity, and anoxic depositional environments contribute to organic matter preservation, promoting the formation of oil shales.

Hydrothermal mineral assemblages of calcite and dolomite-analcime-pyrite in Permian lacustrine Lucaogou mudstones, eastern Junggar Basin, Northwest China

Hong Li et al.

Summary: The eastern Junggar Basin, influenced by continental extension during the middle Permian period, was deposited with lacustrine-dominated sediments. Various mineral assemblages with porphyritic-like textures suggest a hydrothermal origin. Rare earth element patterns and isotopic ratios indicate interactions between different sources of water and sediments underground, leading to the precipitation of different minerals.

An Early Holocene Primary Dolomite Layer of Abiotic Origin in Lake Sayram, Central Asia

Jianru Cheng et al.

Summary: The study found a 12-cm-thick dolomite layer formed in Lake Sayram in Central Asia, consisting of calcium-rich dolomite crystals with irregular shapes. It is suggested that the dolomite may have formed under the influence of day and night temperature cycling in shallow lake water due to the local warming trend. This study provides evidence for abiotic dolomite formation at ambient temperature.

Coupling of paleoenvironment and biogeochemistry of deep-time alkaline lakes: A lipid biomarker perspective

Summary: Lipid biomarkers indicate that ancient alkaline lakes were reducing, hypersaline, and stratified, with biomass dominated by algae and bacteria, especially halotolerant green algae. Different alkaline lakes have subtle differences in their sedimentary environments, and the ratio of algae/bacteria is positively correlated with increasing reducing and saline conditions in the lakes.

Summary: Recent study focused on the paleoenvironment and depositional history of the Es-1 Member of Paleogene Shahejie Formation in the Bohai Basin, addressing factors controlling organic matter accumulation and preservation. Results suggest that organic-enriched shale deposits accumulated under humid conditions, with organic carbon content primarily controlled by salinity and secondarily by primary productivity and redox conditions.
