Differences in geochemistry and hydrocarbon generation of source- rock samples dominated by telalginite and lamalginite: A case study on the Permian saline lacustrine source rocks in the Jimusaer Sag, NW China

Summary: The study analyzed the geochemical and hydrocarbon generation differences of the typical saline lacustrine oil shale in the Middle Permian Lucaogou Formation in Northwestern China. By analyzing 57 core samples from two boreholes through total organic carbon analysis, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, and gas chromatographic-mass spectrometry experiments, the kinetics of oil generation were studied. The results showed that hydrocarbons produced by telalginite and lamalginite exhibit different compositions and conversion rates, and lamalginite has a narrower distribution of activation energies, indicating relatively lagging hydrocarbon generation.

Summary: In the Lucaogou Formation shale in the Jimusaer Sag of the Junggar Basin, organic geochemical and petrological analyses revealed that the source rocks are mainly composed of two types of maceral - lamalginite and telalginite. Both macerals have good hydrocarbon-generating potential, but in the lower thermal evolution stage, telalginite has a higher hydrocarbon-generating rate.

Paleoenvironment, organic matter maturity and the hydrocarbon potential of Menilite shales (Silesian Unit, Polish Outer Carpathians) - Organic and inorganic geochemical proxies

Summary: The Oligocene Menilite shales in the Polish Outer Carpathians represent different depositional environments, with the Znamirowice section showing terrestrial organic matter input and the Kobielnik section representing a more distal marine environment. The presence of abundant alginite indicates medium-to-high primary productivity, and the inorganic proxies suggest deposition in an unrestricted basin. The studied Menilite shales are considered to be source rocks with good-to-excellent hydrocarbon potential.

An evaluation of organic matter dispersed in the Menilite Formation in Silesian Nappe (Polish Outer Carpathians): an optical microscopic approach

Summary: In this study, optical microscopic analyses were conducted to evaluate the thermal maturity, characteristics of solid bitumen, and other dispersed organic matter in the Oligocene shales of the Menilite Formation in Poland. The results showed that the hydrocarbon generation conditions in the samples were immature, and the thermal maturity of the organic matter was associated with the oil window for petroleum generation. The organic components in the samples were typical of hydrocarbon-prone organic matter of kerogen type II.

Summary: The study focused on chaotic complexes hosting carbonate concretions in the Upper Oligocene successions of the Outer Carpathians and revealed their formation as a result of submarine slumps induced by tectonically-induced dissociation of gas hydrates. The isotopic analysis was crucial for understanding the process of anaerobic oxidation of methane and dissociation of gas hydrates, providing valuable information about the sedimentary environment and geological context.
