Provenance and source-to-sink of lower-middle Jurassic sediments from hinterland mounts to NW-Gondwana hyper-extended passive margin (Prerif sub-domain, External Rif, Morocco): First evidence from sedimentary petrology and detrital Zircon geochronology

Hajar Kairouani et al.

Summary: This study investigates the provenance of lower-middle Jurassic successions in the External Prerif Foreland basin through sedimentary petrology and Zircon geochronology. The results suggest that the detrital sandstones originated from different high-grade metamorphic, plutonic basements, and overlying sedimentary source rocks, ranging in age from Paleoproterozoic to middle-Late Devonian. These sources are associated with the exotic Sehoul Block, Western Meseta, and Central and Occidental Anti Atlas belts.

Decoupled local climate and chemical weathering intensity of fine-grained siliciclastic sediments from a paleo-megalake: An example from the Qaidam basin, northern Tibetan Plateau

Ling Wang et al.

Summary: The clay mineralogy and elemental geochemistry of lacustrine sedimentary records play a significant role in paleo-weathering and paleo-climate studies. However, the interpretation of paleo-climatic conditions can differ when analyzing different sedimentary components, especially in megalake systems. This study focuses on lacustrine fine-grained deposits from the northwestern Qaidam basin to reconstruct paleo-weathering history and sediment provenance using clay mineralogical and geochemical data. The results suggest that the composition and weathering records of these sedimentary deposits were influenced by tectonic and climatic changes in distant regions to the east. This study highlights the importance of considering sediment source-to-sink perspectives in paleo-climate studies based on siliciclastic materials in megalake systems.

Tectonic and climatic forcing of chemical weathering intensity in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau since the middle Miocene

Hanjing Fu et al.

Summary: The chemical weathering of continental silicates plays a crucial role in regulating Earth's long-term climate and global carbon cycle. The study in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau since the middle Miocene reveals a close interaction between weathering processes, climate, and tectonics. The sediment provenance and paleo-chemical weathering history in the region have remained relatively stable since the middle Miocene, with changes in weathering intensity influenced by both climate shifts and tectonic activity. Uplift-induced physical denudation and regional aridity have contributed to a transition in the chemical weathering regime, highlighting the complex relationship between weathering intensity, climate, and tectonics in arid, tectonically-active regions.

Gaining from loss: Detrital zircon source-normalized a-dose discriminates first- versus multi-cycle grain histories

Maximilian Droellner et al.

Summary: Detrital zircon U-Pb ages can be used as an archive of geological processes, and changes in these ages can reflect changes in source areas. This study introduces the use of alpha-dose to identify sedimentary recycling in modern fluvial and littoral environments. The results show that detrital zircon is predominantly sourced from the local basement, but there is significant reworking of coastal plain sediments. A novel metric called source-normalized alpha-dose is introduced to measure sediment recycling. This metric provides a more robust interpretation of U-Pb zircon data.

Pulsed rise and growth of the Tibetan Plateau to its northern margin since ca. 30 Ma

Weitao Wang et al.

Summary: The onset of mountain building along the margins of the Tibetan Plateau provides important constraints on the formation of the high topography in Eurasia. New evidence suggests that the Qaidam basin in the northern plateau formed later than previously thought, based on the age and provenance of Cenozoic sediments. The development of the Qilian Shan in the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau occurred in two stages, starting at around 30 Ma and 10 Ma, respectively. Widespread synchronous deformation throughout the Tibetan Plateau and its margins, around 30 Ma and 10-15 Ma, suggests that mantle lithosphere removal may have contributed to these stages of outward growth.

Summary: Detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology has been utilized to enhance the understanding of sediment provenance, transportation pathways, and depositional age of sedimentary packages. A novel method of in situ detrital zircon U-Pb measurements on thin-sections was proposed in this paper, providing greater confidence in maximum depositional ages and provenance interpretations. The study of 310 detrital zircon grains from the Triassic Mungaroo Formation in the Northern Carnarvon Basin, Australia, revealed differences in age mode proportions, quantifying sample bias through grain size comparison.

Summary: The Central China Orogenic Belt (CCOB) consists of multiple important orogens that record the continental collision history of the North China, South China, Qaidam, Tarim and Qiangtang Blocks. From around 550 million years ago, the breakup of the Rodinia supercontinent led to the formation of the Proto-Tethys Ocean, and subsequent processes such as spreading and subduction shaped the evolution of the CCOB. The CCOB has undergone a complex tectonic evolution from the early Proto-Tethys to the later Paleo-Tethys domains, leading to the formation and closure of various oceans and back-arc basins.

Topographic growth of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau during the middle-late Miocene: Insights from integrated provenance analysis in the NE Qaidam Basin

Chaopeng Li et al.

Summary: Research indicates that during the middle to late Miocene, around 13-8 million years ago, the sediment source of the northeastern Qaidam Basin may have shifted from the East Kunlun Shan to the Qilian Shan, suggesting significant topographic growth in the southern Qilian Shan during this period. This is supported by widespread deformation records in the Qilian Shan during the middle to late Miocene, as well as abrupt changes in provenance, sedimentary facies, and climate indexes in surrounding basins, implying that the high topography of the NE Tibetan Plateau may have been established since the middle to late Miocene.
