Compressed Sensing in Sodium Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Techniques, Applications, and Future Prospects

Qingping Chen et al.

Summary: Sodium MRI plays a critical role in cell physiology but is limited by low signal-to-noise ratio and long acquisition times. Compressed sensing techniques have been shown to accelerate sodium imaging and improve image quality significantly. CS-based sodium MRI shows potential in clinical applications.

Hemodialysis Patients with Cardiovascular Disease Reveal Increased Tissue Na+ Deposition

Anna-Carolina Friedrich et al.

Summary: In hemodialysis patients, those with cardiovascular disease exhibit higher tissue sodium accumulation compared to those without cardiovascular disease. However, there is no significant difference in body water distribution between the two groups.

Towards accelerated quantitative sodium MRI at 7 T in the skeletal muscle: Comparison of anisotropic acquisition- and compressed sensing techniques

Matthias Utzschneider et al.

Summary: The study compared three anisotropic acquisition schemes and three compressed sensing approaches for TSC quantification using Na-23 MRI at 7 T. Results showed that combining 3D-DLCS and SOS-GR with CS improved TSC quantification accuracy, reducing acquisition time to less than 2 minutes while maintaining comparable quantitative accuracy to fully sampled NUFFT reconstruction.

Combined imaging of potassium and sodium in human skeletal muscle tissue at 7 T

Lena Gast et al.

Summary: The feasibility of quantitative combined potassium (K-39) and sodium (Na-23) MRI in human calf muscle tissue was validated, with reproducible measurements of aTPC and aTSC determined. The results showed a low coefficient of variation between scan and re-scan for aTSC and aTPC determination, with mean values measured for aTSC = (17 +/- 1) mM and aTPC = (85 +/- 5) mM in healthy muscle tissue.

3D sodium (23Na) magnetic resonance fingerprinting for time-efficient relaxometric mapping

Fabian J. Kratzer et al.

Summary: A framework for 3D sodium MR fingerprinting was developed, allowing simultaneous quantification of T1, T2l*, T2s*, and T2*. The method used tailored flip angle patterns and time-efficient data acquisition. Experimental results in both phantoms and human brains demonstrated the feasibility of this approach to sodium relaxometric mapping within approximately 30 minutes.

Skin sodium is increased in male patients with multiple sclerosis and related animal models

Konstantin Huhn et al.

Summary: Novel MRI techniques reveal the skin as a significant compartment of sodium storage in health and disease, with potential links to MS immunopathology. Increased sodium content in skin, as detected by Na-23-MRI, may predict future disease activity in male patients with RRMS. The skin's role as a storage compartment for sodium and its potential implications in autoimmune neuroinflammation, such as in MS, warrant further investigation.
