Image Phenotyping of Preterm-Born Children Using Hyperpolarized 129Xe Lung Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Multiple-Breath Washout

Ho-Fung Chan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and lung function phenotypes on lung ventilation and microstructure in preterm-born children. The results showed that preterm-born children with POLD had increased ventilation abnormalities, while those with BPD had abnormal lung microstructure.

Lung MRI with hyperpolarised gases: current & future clinical perspectives

Neil J. Stewart et al.

Summary: The use of pulmonary MRI has been limited in clinical settings, but advancements in ultrashort and zero echo time MRI techniques have enabled non-ionising structural imaging in certain lung disorders. Hyperpolarised gas MRI with inhaled 3He and 129Xe, a complementary technique for functional and microstructural imaging of the lung, has great potential as a clinical tool for early detection and improved understanding of pathophysiology in various lung diseases. It can also enable safe and sensitive monitoring of disease progression and response to therapy.

Clinical Feasibility of Structural and Functional MRI in Free-Breathing Neonates and Infants

Brandon Zanette et al.

Summary: The feasibility of structural and functional pulmonary MRI in neonates and infants without cardiorespiratory disease was investigated. The study showed that MRI using standard clinical hardware can provide effective lung imaging in free-breathing infants, allowing for the evaluation of lung abnormalities and providing comprehensive information.

Protocols for multi-site trials using hyperpolarized 129Xe MRI for imaging of ventilation, alveolar-airspace size, and gas exchange: A position paper from the 129Xe MRI clinical trials consortium

Peter J. Niedbalski et al.

Summary: Standard protocols for harmonizing methods of image acquisition in HP Xe-129 MRI have been recommended to promote consistency in imaging studies and facilitate wider adoption of HP Xe-129 MRI in translational research, multi-site trials, and clinical practice. Recommendations have been made for the most common HP gas MRI techniques and Xe-129 dose volumes to enhance imaging study consistency. Additionally, a roadmap for technical developments has been provided to further improve image quality and efficiency in HP Xe-129 MRI.

Alveolar Airspace Size in Healthy and Diseased Infant Lungs Measured via Hyperpolarized 3He Gas Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Nara S. Higano et al.

Summary: The study quantified alveolar airspace size in healthy and diseased infant lung specimens using hyperpolarized gas diffusion MRI, with comparison to histological morphometry. Results showed that HP gas diffusion MRI is sensitive to healthy and diseased regional alveolar airspace size in infant lungs, with a good comparison to quantitative histology in ex vivo specimens.
