Ring-opening Polymerization of Enantiopure Bicyclic Ether-ester Monomers toward Closed-loop Recyclable and Crystalline Stereoregular Polyesters via Chemical Upcycling of Bioplastic

Zheng Li et al.

Summary: By upcycling poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) bioplastic, a series of enantiopure bicyclic ether-ester monomers were synthesized. The living/controlled ring-opening polymerizations of these monomers produced stereoregular polyesters with controlled molecular weights and well-defined chain ends. The effects of stereoconfiguration and substituent on polymerization kinetics, thermodynamics, and the thermal properties of the resulting polyesters were investigated. Notably, these stereoregular polyesters are semi-crystalline materials with melting temperatures up to 176 degrees C, higher than commodity polyolefin plastics. They can be depolymerized back to recover pristine monomers, establishing a closed-loop life cycle.

Advancing the Development of Recyclable Aromatic Polyesters by Functionalization and Stereocomplexation

Hua-Zhong Fan et al.

Summary: This contribution focuses on the development of innovative synthetic polymer systems for advanced material applications and sustainable development. Aromatic polyesters were successfully prepared through a facile one-pot synthesis and showed high-performance properties such as high thermal stability, crystallinity, mechanical strength, ductility, and toughness. The functionalizable moieties of the polyesters allowed for post-polymerization modifications and the polymers exhibited excellent circular life cycle through selective depolymerization into monomers.

Poly(hydroxyalkanoates): Production, Applications and End-of-Life Strategies-Life Cycle Assessment Nexus

Joseph Kinyanjui Muiruri et al.

Summary: The excessive production and consumption of oil-based plastics are major contributors to global warming and increased carbon footprint. The majority of plastic waste ends up in the oceans, accounting for about 80% of marine debris. To address this pollution problem, a shift towards eco-friendly and marine-biodegradable plastics is necessary, with polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) standing out as the best choice due to their ability to degrade in soil and marine environments. PHAs are also favored for their biocompatibility, structural variety, and similarity to conventional plastics in terms of physical properties. This article comprehensively explores the production, applications, and recycling strategies of PHA plastics, as well as the impact of end-of-life strategies and life cycle assessment (LCA) on the environment.

Chemical Upcycling of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) into Bicyclic Ether-Ester Monomers toward Value-Added, Degradable, and Recyclable Poly(ether ester)

Zheng Li et al.

Summary: Chemical recycling of plastic wastes to convert into value-added products is an attractive strategy to reduce fossil fuel consumption and plastic pollution. This study demonstrates the upcycling of P3HB into valuable monomers and subsequent polymerization to produce degradable and recyclable polymers. The synthesized monomers undergo ring-opening polymerization catalyzed by Sn(Oct)(2) to form amorphous materials, which can be depolymerized back to monomers for closed-loop recycling.

Chemical Upcycling of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) toward Functional Poly(amine-alt-ester) via Tandem Degradation and Ring- Opening Polymerization

Zheng Li et al.

Summary: The synthesis of a novel N-heterocyclic lactone and its corresponding poly(amine-alt-ester) through upcycling of P3HB biopolymer has been achieved. The obtained polymers can be depolymerized back to the monomer form and repolymerized to produce high-quality polymers. The study provides valuable insights into addressing plastic end-of-use problem through upcycling.

100th Anniversary of Macromolecular Science Viewpoint: Redefining Sustainable Polymers

Danielle E. Fagnani et al.

Summary: There has been an increased focus on sustainable polymers in recent years, but less attention has been paid to the end-of-life fate of polymers. It is suggested to place more emphasis on chemical recycling to promote a closed-loop plastic economy, in order to keep us on the path to sustainability.
