Leveraging the monomer structure for high-performance chemically recyclable semiaromatic polyesters

Hua-Zhong Fan et al.

Summary: The development of inexpensive and high-performance chemically recyclable polymers offers a promising strategy for addressing plastic pollution. In this study, aromatic monomers derived from aromatic hydroxy acids and epoxides were used to prepare semiaromatic polyesters. These polymers exhibited high thermal stability and improved glass transition temperature. Additionally, they could be effectively and selectively depolymerized, establishing a circular plastics economy.

High Oxygen Barrier Polyester from 3,3′-Bifuran-5,5′-dicarboxylic Acid

Tuomo P. Kainulainen et al.

Summary: An exceptional oxygen barrier polyester was prepared from 3,3'-bifuran-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid, a new biomass-derived monomer. The cross-linking of the furan-based polyester upon exposure to air significantly reduced its O2 permeability, rendering its performance comparable to ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymers. The structural trigger for this transformation was the presence of 5,5'-disubstituted 3,3'-bifuran moieties.

High-Barrier Biobased Copolyesters with Targeted Glass Transition Temperatures as Renewable Alternatives for PET

Asmaa M. Ahmed et al.

Summary: A series of furan-based copolyesters were synthesized and investigated for their glass transition temperature (Tg) matching with poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) as well as their enhanced O2 barrier properties. The copolyesters, composed of dimethyl 5,5'-sulfanediyldi(furan-2-carboxylate) (DM-SFA) with either dimethyl 2,5-furandicarboxylate (DM-FDCA) or dimethyl 2,2'-bifuran-5,5'-dicarboxylate (DM-BFDCA) as the main monomers, showed Tg similar to PET and low O2 and UV-light permeabilities. The addition of DM-FDCA as a minor comonomer provided PET-like Tg, whereas the O2 permeabilities were reduced compared to DM-BFDCA-based copolyesters. Furthermore, the copolyesters containing isosorbide (IS) as a comonomer showed lower thermal stability and incomplete dissolution after polycondensation.

Tough and Thermally Recyclable Semiaromatic Polyesters by Ring-Opening Polymerization of Benzo-thia-caprolactones

Ling-Gao Li et al.

Summary: Thermally recyclable semiaromatic polyesters were prepared by ring-opening polymerization of benzene-fused caprolactones. Three constitutional isomers of benzo-thia-caprolactones were synthesized and their organocatalytic ROPs were systematically investigated. The mechanical properties, thermal stability, and depolymerization behavior of these polymers were studied, showing promising results for potential closed-loop recyclable plastics.

Poly(butylene 2,4-furanoate), an Added Member to the Class of Smart Furan-Based Polyesters for Sustainable Packaging: Structural Isomerism as a Key to Tune the Final Properties

Enrico Bianchi et al.

Summary: The study synthesized high-molecular-weight 2,4-PBF through an eco-friendly solvent-free process and found differences in glass-to-rubber transition, melting temperature, and crystallization capability compared to 2,5-PBF. The isomerism affects thermal stability, mechanical properties, and gas barrier performance, with 2,4-PBF showing better chemical resistance, flexibility, toughness, and significantly lower O2 and CO2 transmission rates. The gas blocking capability decreases after annealing due to the presence of disclination associated with crystal formation.

Recommendations for replacing PET on packaging, fiber, and film materials with biobased counterparts

Andreia F. Sousa et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the importance of replacing the polymer resin PET, discussing various potential PET alternatives from biomass such as bio-PET, PEF, and PTF. While these biobased polymers may play a significant role in various applications in the future, their cost competitiveness remains a major obstacle to wider deployment. Social, political, and legal frameworks, along with supportive financial schemes, are driving rapid changes in the development and adoption of these renewable alternatives.

Low-energy catalytic methanolysis of poly(ethyleneterephthalate)

Duong Dinh Pham et al.

Summary: In this study, a low-energy catalytic route for methanolysis to convert PET resin to DMT was developed, achieving high DMT selectivity at ambient temperature by controlling the moisture level. The PET depolymerization apparently proceeded through two series of reaction steps, and the degradation of PET had a relatively low activation energy of 66.5 kJ mol(-1), which was accountable for catalytic methanolysis of PET at ambient conditions.
