Synthesis and Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization of a Strained trans-Silacycloheptene and Single-Molecule Mechanics of Its Polymer

Herbert Wakefield et al.

Summary: The cis- and trans-isomers of a silacycloheptene were selectively synthesized using a silyl dianion, providing a novel method for studying strained cycloalkenes. Quantum chemical calculations and crystallographic signatures confirmed that the trans-isomer is more strained than the cis isomer. The trans-isomer also exhibited unique reactivity in ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and showed increased molecular compliance compared to carbon-based analogues.

Mechanochemistry of Cubane

Liqi Wang et al.

Summary: The mechanochemical reactivity of highly strained pentacyclic hydrocarbon cubane is investigated in this study. It is found that mechanical activation of cubane only occurs under specific pulling attachment conditions, and leads to the formation of a specific product. Single molecule force spectroscopy further reveals that the mechanochemical reactivity of cubane is lower than that of conventional cyclobutanes.

Highly selective addition of cyclosilanes to alkynes enabling new conjugated materials

Qifeng Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, we report a new method for the addition reaction between cyclosilanes and aryl acetylenes. The resulting organosilanes exhibit visible light absorption properties and can serve as important building blocks for the synthesis of novel conjugated polymers.

Single-Event Spectroscopy and Unravelling Kinetics of Covalent Domains Based on Cyclobutane Mechanophores

Brandon H. Bowser et al.

Summary: This study reports the force-dependent kinetics of stored length release in a family of covalent domain polymers based on cis-1,2-substituted cyclobutane mechanophores. By replacing a methylene in the pulling attachment with a phenyl group, the force necessary to achieve rate constants is significantly lowered. The kinetics are negligibly perturbed by changes in the amount of stored length, providing promise for applications in probing molecular behavior in polymer networks and optimizing materials made from covalent domain polymers.

Understanding the Mechanochemistry of Ladder-Type Cyclobutane Mechanophores by Single Molecule Force Spectroscopy

Matias Horst et al.

Summary: A series of ladder-type cyclobutane mechanophores have been reported, which can transform from nonconjugated structures to conjugated structures and change many properties. The activation of these mechanophores occurs with similar early transition states, as revealed by single molecule force spectroscopy. Understanding these ladder-type mechanophores will aid in the future design of multicyclic mechanophores with amplified force-response.
