Recovery of epoxy thermosets and their composites

Xu Zhao et al.

Summary: Epoxy thermoset, the most commonly used thermoset plastic, is extensively applied in composite materials, electronic packaging materials, coatings, and adhesives. The increasing demands for wind power as a new energy source have greatly boosted the use of epoxy thermoset composite materials in wind turbine blades. The recovery of epoxy thermosets is currently a critical challenge due to the large-scale decommissioning of these materials. This review summarizes recent advances in the recovery of epoxy thermosets through source-based recovery strategies (rational design of recyclable thermosets) and end-based recovery strategies (recovery approaches for existing thermosets). The review focuses on the physcycling and chemcycling methods based on end-based recovery strategies and highlights important considerations in chemcycling, such as mass transfer and heat transfer, solvent effects, utilization of reinforced materials and epoxy thermosets, and upcycling. It suggests the development of application-oriented chemcycling based on selective degradation and effective reconstruction. The review concludes by discussing forthcoming challenges and prospects for future development.

Engineering of Chain Rigidity and Hydrogen Bond Cross-Linking toward Ultra-Strong, Healable, Recyclable, and Water-Resistant Elastomers

Zhiwei Guo et al.

Summary: High-performance elastomers that integrate ultra-high mechanical strength, toughness, and excellent healing and recycling capacities have been successfully fabricated. These elastomers, known as PI-PUU, are composed of rigid polyimide (PI) segments and soft poly(urea-urethane) (PUU) segments dynamically cross-linked with hydrogen bonds. The PI-PUU elastomers possess a record-breaking tensile strength of approximately 142 MPa and an extremely high toughness of approximately 527 MJ m(-3). The elastomer structure consists of a hydrogen-bond-cross-linked elastic matrix and homogeneously dispersed rigid nanostructures. The rigid PI segments self-assemble to generate phase-separated nanostructures that serve as nanofillers, significantly strengthening the elastomers. Moreover, the elastic matrix, composed of soft PUU segments cross-linked with reversible hydrogen bonds, greatly enhances the strength and toughness of the elastomer. The dynamically cross-linked PI-PUU elastomers can be healed and recycled to restore their original mechanical strength. Furthermore, the PI-PUU elastomers exhibit scratch-, puncture-, and water-resistant properties due to the excellent mechanical performance and hydrophobic PI segments.

Polymerization-Induced Crystallization of Dopant Molecules: An Efficient Strategy for Room-Temperature Phosphorescence of Hydrogels

Huaqiang Ju et al.

Summary: We propose a facile strategy to achieve room-temperature phosphorescence in conventional hydrogels by polymerization-induced crystallization of dopant molecules, leading to clusterization-induced phosphorescence. Crown ethers dissolved in a concentrated acrylamide aqueous solution crystallize during polymerization to form large spherulites in the hydrogel, resulting in carbonyl clusters and phosphorescence emission. This strategy is universally applicable to hydrogels with different polymeric matrices and dopant molecules. The development of hydrogels with mechanical and phosphorescent properties holds great potential in the biomedical and engineering fields.

ROS-Scavenging Electroactive Polyphosphazene-Based Core-Shell Nanofibers for Bone Regeneration

Yiqian Huang et al.

Summary: Bone defects are often accompanied by inflammation caused by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), which hinders bone tissue regeneration. Biodegradable polyorganophosphazenes (POPPs) have been found to effectively scavenge ROS and show better results in promoting bone regeneration compared to traditional polymers. Core-shell structured PLGA/PATGP nanofibers were also found to have better modulation effects on cellular behavior, making them a promising candidate scaffold for bone tissue engineering.
