A Neuron-Readable Artificial Photoreceptor Composed of Photodeformable Liquid Crystal Polymers and Piezoelectric Materials

Bo Peng et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a neuron-readable artificial photoreceptor that converts light into strong electric signals using photodeformable liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) and polyvinylidene fluoride trifluoroethylene (P(VDF-TrFE)). This artificial photoreceptor successfully transduces photo-induced electric signals to cells and tissues, communicates with neurons, and triggers spiking activities in blind retinas.

Lightweight and geometrically complex ceramics derived from 4D printed shape memory precursor with reconfigurability and programmability for sensing and actuation applications

Siyao Chen et al.

Summary: There is growing interest in additive manufacturing (AM) of ceramics due to the feasibility of achieving complex shapes. Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) offer advantages for ceramic AM, but the potential of preceramic polymers is not fully utilized. This study synthesized a multifunctional preceramic polymer composite with reconfigurability and shape memory effect, allowing 4D printing of lightweight self-shaping ceramics with complex geometries. The resulting ceramics showed semiconducting behavior and were used to design temperature sensors with reshaping capabilities.

A processable, high-performance dielectric elastomer and multilayering process

Ye Shi et al.

Summary: Dielectric elastomers (DEs) are capable of generating mechanical work in response to an electric field. In this study, a processable, high-performance dielectric elastomer (PHDE) with a bimodal network structure was synthesized, and its electromechanical properties were tailored by adjusting cross-linkers and hydrogen bonding. The PHDE exhibited high strains without prestretching and multilayer actuators were fabricated using a dry stacking process.

Multiphotoinduced Bending of Azobenzene-Modified Graphene Oxide/Poly(vinyl alcohol) Composite Films for Smart Devices

Tingting Xu et al.

Summary: This study presents a composite film exhibiting multibending behaviors under UV/vis and NIR light irradiation. The reversible bending and recovery reactions of the AZO-GO/PVA composite film upon light exposure are achieved by the trans-cis-photoisomerization of azobenzene groups. The film also curls slightly away from the NIR light source due to the photothermal effect of the GO component, showing enhanced mechanical properties with low-cost and facile manufacturing.

Hydrogen Bond Enhances Photomechanical Swing of Liquid-Crystalline Polymer Bilayer Films

Jianchuang Wang et al.

Summary: The study introduces a photodriven swing actuator utilizing commercially available polyimide and azobenzene-containing liquid-crystalline polymers. The presence of supramolecular hydrogen bonding in the liquid-crystalline polymer films greatly enhances the swing amplitude under continuous irradiation. Additionally, the formation of hydrogen bonds extends the timescale of photodriven swing and improves the elastic modulus of the material.
