Thermochromic Hydrogels with Dynamic Solar Modulation and Regulatable Critical Response Temperature for Energy-Saving Smart Windows

Gang Xu et al.

Summary: In this work, a versatile thermochromic hydrogel system was developed by introducing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles into a crosslinked copolymer. The smart windows made from this hydrogel system showed excellent solar modulation ability, dual responsiveness, and adjustable phase transition temperature. They selectively blocked infrared light during the day while allowing ultraviolet and visible light through, benefiting indoor illumination and heat insulation. At night, the windows became opaque to protect privacy. This hydrogel-based smart window design offers a promising solution for energy-saving buildings.

Dual Thermo-Responsive and Strain-Responsive Ionogels for Smart Windows and Temperature/Motion Monitoring

Xuemeng Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a stretchable, dual thermo-responsive and strain-responsive ionogel was synthesized using a one-step photopolymerization method. The resulting ionogel exhibited high stretchability, high ionic conductivity, and good temperature tolerance. It also showed a tunable phase-transition temperature and reversible color/transparency switching. The ionogel-based temperature monitors, smart windows, and strain sensors demonstrated excellent designability, programmability, temperature modulation ability, and thermal responsiveness. This approach holds great promise for the development of multifunctional stimuli-responsive materials.

Hydrophilicity-Hydrophobicity Transformation, Thermoresponsive Morphomechanics, and Crack Multifurcation Revealed by AIEgens in Mechanically Strong Hydrogels

Yubing Hu et al.

Summary: The biomimetic exploration of stimuli-responsive and crack-resistant hydrogels is important, but limited by insufficient mechanism study due to the lack of imaging techniques at the mesoscale level. By incorporating aggregation- and polarity-sensitive fluorescent probes in a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) network, a series of composite hydrogels with compartmentalized thermal response are designed. The fluorescence technique is explored as a powerful tool to visualize the hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity transformation and composition-dependent microphase separation in the hydrogels, leading to the proposal of a concept of morphomechanics with comprehensive mechanism clarification. The thermoresponsive toughening is attributed to the formation of multiple noncovalent interactions and conformational changes of PNIPAM chains, while the enhanced fracture energy by crack multifurcation is related to the tearing-like disruption of weak interfaces between separated phases.

Si Wu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the functionality of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) immobilized gold nanoparticles as both colorimetric temperature-sensors and reusable temperature-switchable catalysts. The sensitivity of the colorimetric temperature-sensor could be significantly improved by adding salts or controlling salt concentrations. The temperature-switchable PNIPAMs-AuNP hybrid nanoparticles can catalyze the reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol and be recycled through centrifugation for reuse.
