Interpretable Machine Learning Models for Phase Prediction in Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Yiwen Lu et al.

Summary: We developed a data-driven methodology based on statistical machine learning for the probabilistic modeling of PISA morphologies. The model showed good prediction performance for mixtures of known monomer pairs but weaker performance for extrapolation to new monomer combinations. However, it still achieved nontrivial prediction performance and was able to select a smart set of experiments for creating empirical phase diagrams.

Simultaneous Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Bottlebrush Block Copolymers at Room Temperature via Photoinitiated RAFT Dispersion Polymerization

Dongdong Liu et al.

Summary: This study reports the first simultaneous synthesis and self-assembly of bottlebrush block copolymers at room temperature using photoinitiated polymerization-induced self-assembly (photo-PISA) with multifunctional macromolecular chain transfer agents (macro-CTAs). The bottlebrush block copolymers promote the formation of higher-order morphologies and exhibit a higher polymerization rate compared to linear block copolymers. The obtained bottlebrush block copolymer vesicles are used as seeds for further chain extension and formation of multicompartment nanoparticles with a sponge internal structure. This study expands polymer architectures employed in PISA and provides a new strategy for synthesizing polymer nanoparticles with unique structures.

Summary: With reversible deactivated radical polymerization techniques, polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has become a convenient method for preparing block copolymer nanoparticles in situ with high concentrations. These nanoparticles have wide potential applications in nanomedicine, coatings, nanomanufacture, and Pickering emulsions. By introducing stimulus responsiveness into PISA nanoparticles, Pickering emulsions stabilized with these nanoparticles can exhibit smart behaviors, allowing reversible emulsification and demulsification. This review focuses on recent progress in Pickering emulsions stabilized by stimuli-responsive PISA nanoparticles, discussing factors affecting the stability during emulsification and demulsification, as well as exploring applications in antibacterial agents, diphase reaction platforms, and multi-emulsions. The future developments and applications of stimuli-responsive Pickering emulsions stabilized by PISA nanoparticles are also highlighted.

Summary: Heterogeneous reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization is a significant method for preparing well-defined block copolymers and block copolymer nanoparticles. This study investigates the influence of different positions of macro-RAFT agents on RAFT dispersion polymerization and demonstrates that a binary mixture of R-type and Z-type macro-RAFT agents can address the issue of uncontrolled polymerization.
