Poly(ionic liquid)s for Photo-Driven CO2 Cycloaddition: Electron Donor-Acceptor Segments Matter

Xu Fang et al.

Summary: In this study, poly(ionic liquid)s were proposed as metal-free catalysts for photo-driven CO2 cycloaddition without cocatalysts. The photo-driven catalytic performance of the poly(ionic liquid)s with donor-acceptor segments (conversion rate of 83.5% for glycidyl phenyl ether) was found to be approximately 4.9 times higher than their thermal-driven catalytic performance (17.2%) at the same temperature. Mechanism studies revealed that the donor-acceptor segments promoted photo-induced charge separation, which accelerated the CO2 cycloaddition reaction. This work paves the way for the further use of poly(ionic liquid)s as catalysts in photo-driven CO2 cycloaddition.

Macroscale Conjugated Microporous Polymers: Controlling Versatile Functionalities Over Several Dimensions

Weiyi Zhang et al.

Summary: Since their discovery in 2007, conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have been developed for various applications. However, the insolubility and poor processability of CMPs due to their rigid structure limit their usability. Therefore, the development of CMPs with controllable structures on both micro- and macroscales has attracted great interest. Recent bottom-up synthesis strategies have been developed to obtain CMPs as thin films or hybrid materials, allowing for the span of different length scales. This review summarizes the recent advances in constructing CMPs into macroscale structures and discusses the fabrication techniques and implications of these structures in applications such as molecular separation, energy storage and conversion, photothermal transformation, sensing, and catalysis.
