Efficient Synthesis and PISA Behavior of Molecular Bottlebrush Block Copolymers via a Grafting-From Strategy through RAFT Dispersion Polymerization

Wangmeng Hou et al.

Summary: Precise synthesis of molecular bottlebrushes (MBBs) with high yield and varying chemical compositions was achieved via a grafting-from strategy using reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) technique. Multifunctional macro-CTAs based on the polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA)-assisted grafting-from strategy were used for the synthesis of MBB BCPs with high yield and low dispersity through RAFT dispersion polymerization. The PISA behaviors of the MBB BCPs revealed a transition from spherical micelles to two-dimensional disk-like micelles.

Expanding the toolbox of controlled/living branching radical polymerization through simulation-informed reaction design

Mengxue Cao et al.

Summary: Branched polymers have shown their advantages in biomedical applications, water treatment, and catalysis, and the grafting of branched functional polymers can be efficiently achieved through controlled chain-growth branching polymerization. In this article, the chain-growth process was achieved by copolymerizing alpha-haloacrylate with conventional vinyl monomers. Well-defined branched polymers with tunable degrees of branching were successfully synthesized and their thermoresponsive properties were studied.

Efficient Metal-Free Norbornadiene-Maleimide Click Reaction for the Formation of Molecular Bottlebrushes

Zheqi Li et al.

Summary: A highly efficient metal-free grafting-onto strategy based on the Cp-maleimide click reaction was developed for the preparation of molecular bottlebrushes with tunable morphology and various functionalities. The grafting density was influenced by the concentration and composition of the side chains, reaching up to 100% at specific feed ratios. Atomic force microscopy characterization showed that the morphology of the obtained molecular bottlebrushes could be tuned from rodlike to wormlike by adjusting the degree of polymerization of the backbone.

The in vitro and in vivo properties of ringlike polymer brushes

Changfeng Yin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the properties of cyclic cylindrical polymer brushes (CPBs) with a ringlike morphology for the first time and found that they are more prone to non-specific protein adsorption compared to their linear counterparts. Despite lower cellular uptake and tumor permeability, cyclic CPBs exhibited excellent passive tumor targeting ability and achieved a tumor uptake of about 8.2% of the injected dose per gram of tissue after a single intravenous administration.
