Development and application of TaqMan probe-based quantitative PCR assays for the detection of tilapia parvovirus

Jidapa Yamkasem et al.

Summary: A new TaqMan probe-based quantitative PCR assay was developed for detecting Tilapia parvovirus, showing good repeatability and reproducibility with a detection limit of 10 copies/mu l. The assays had comparable sensitivity to a previously developed SYBR Green qPCR and were more sensitive than conventional PCR, without cross-reactivity with other viruses and bacteria. These assays offer high sensitivity and specificity in detecting low concentrations of TiPV DNA in infected tilapia samples, providing a valuable diagnostic tool for experimental and field samples.

An outbreak of mushroom poisoning in Israel during the 2020 fall and winter season: an unexpected outcome of COVID-19 restrictions?

Yael Lurie et al.

Summary: In the fall/winter of 2020, Israel experienced a significant increase in mushroom poisonings, with 105 calls to the Israel Poison Information Center (IPIC) compared to previous years. Most cases were mild, but 6% resulted in moderate to severe poisoning, including one life-threatening case caused by ingestion of Lepiota brunneoincarnata and Amanita proxima. Possible reasons for this outbreak include favorable climate conditions and increased outdoor activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
