Administrative coding for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is accurate in Swedish patients

Hanne Astrom et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that using the International Classification of Disease (ICD) codes is valid for identifying patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Sweden. Combining the ICD-10 code for NAFLD with codes for obesity or type 2 diabetes can further improve the accuracy of NAFLD diagnosis.

Risk of cardiovascular disease and loss in life expectancy in NAFLD

Ying Shang et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), particularly nonfatal CVD, compared to the general population. However, NAFLD does not affect the mortality risk after a CVD event. Additionally, patients diagnosed with NAFLD have a lower life expectancy than the general population, especially when NAFLD is diagnosed in middle age.

T Cell Subsets and Natural Killer Cells in the Pathogenesis of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Yoseph Asmelash Gebru et al.

Summary: NAFLD is characterized by hepatic accumulation of excess lipids, and various T cell subsets and NK cells have been implicated in its progression, with different functions and phenotypes usually leading to proinflammatory effects. The gut microbiota can influence intrahepatic T cell subsets, and NK cells can accumulate in the liver in response to pathogens and tumors.
