Late Archean-Paleoproterozoic plate tectonics along the northern margin of the North China craton

Chen Wu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the late Archean-Paleoproterozoic tectonic evolution of the North China craton by incorporating various geological techniques. The findings reveal that the formation of the craton is associated with subduction during the ca. 2.55-2.5 Ga period and continental rifting at ca. 2.39 Ga. Furthermore, the collision and rifting between the North China craton and the southern margin of the Siberian craton at ca. 2.0 Ga and ca. 1.87-1.85 Ga respectively coincide with left-slip shear. This research highlights the significance of the ca. 1.9 Ga North China-Siberia collision in the assembly of the Columbia supercontinent.

The nature and origin of cratons constrained by their surface geology

A. M. Celal Sengor et al.

Summary: Cratons are important regions that protect crustal and lithospheric materials and can undergo extensive deformation. They are not solely composed of metamorphic rocks, but also contain unmetamorphosed rocks. Craton formation may be a result of crustal thickening. By studying examples from different regions, we can understand the nature and origin of cratons.

Ridge subduction and episodes of crustal growth in accretionary belts: Evidence from late Paleozoic felsic igneous rocks in the southeastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt, Inner Mongolia, China

Jialiang Li et al.

Summary: The Central Asian Orogenic Belt is the largest accretionary orogen on Earth, and more than 50% of the crust in the belt was formed over a period of 750 million years. The discovery of ridge subduction events in Inner Mongolia region suggests their importance in the formation of rifts and magmatic activity.

Supra-subduction zone ophiolite generated by the initial subduction of an Early Paleozoic island arc system abutting the northern North China Craton: Evidence from meta-igneous rocks

Bingqian Ding et al.

Summary: This study presents new geochronological, geochemical, and isotopic data for igneous rocks in Jilin Province, revealing the evolution of an Early Paleozoic island arc belt. The results suggest the presence of both mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB)-type and arc-type rocks in the studied area, representing different crustal evolution settings.

Geodynamic controls on magmatic arc migration and quiescence

Guido M. Gianni et al.

Summary: The study emphasizes that understanding the combination of both perspectives, the space-time arc pattern and the associated geological framework, provides the best approach to unravel the dominant process controlling arc migration and shut-off. By diagnosing features from the geological record, it can help distinguish the dominant geodynamic process.
