Experimental and computational studies of laterally ethoxy Schiff base-ester liquid crystalline magnets

Wei-Jing Teoh et al.

Summary: A series of liquid crystal compounds with different substituents were synthesized and their thermal-optical behaviors were characterized. The results showed that the type of substituents affects the thermal behavior of the liquid crystals, with the compound containing a Cl atom exhibiting the highest clearing temperature. Computational studies also revealed a correlation between the energy gap of the substituents and the chemical reactivity and clearing temperature.

1,2,3-Triazole lamellar liquid crystal and its non-covalent palladium complex dimer: structure, mesomorphism and self-assembly properties

Meihao Xia et al.

Summary: A 1,4-disubstituted 1H-1,2,3-triazoles was successfully synthesized through a catalyst-free click reaction, leading to the formation of a non-covalent palladium chloride complex with unique liquid crystal properties but relatively poor thermal stability. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed the trans-trans isomeric orientation of the complex, which also showed strip-shaped nanostructures on an oriented graphite substrate.

Synthesis and characterization of biphenyl-based azo liquid crystals and its optical properties: effect of lateral and tail group

Akshay Thakor et al.

Summary: A novel biphenyl substituted rod-shaped azo-based material has been synthesized and characterized, showing enantiotropical nematic and SmC phases with a good temperature range, which is influenced by the variation of alkyl chain. The mesomorphic properties were measured using POM, DSC, and high-temperature XRD techniques, while the photophysical behavior was assessed through UV-Vis spectroscopy.

Wide Nematogenic Azomethine/Ester Liquid Crystals Based on New Biphenyl Derivatives: Mesomorphic and Computational Studies

Fowzia S. Alamro et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal stability and mesomorphic behavior of a new biphenyl azomethine liquid crystal homologues series. The results show that the examined homologues possess high thermal stability and broad nematogenic temperature ranges. The computational studies suggest that as the chain length increased, the polarizability of the series increased, while the biphenyl moiety had an essential impact on the stability of the possible geometries and their thermal as well as physical parameters.

Liquid Crystal Dimers and Smectic Phases from the Intercalated to the Twist-Bend

Corrie T. Imrie et al.

Summary: This review explores the relationship between molecular structure and the presence of smectic phases in liquid crystal dimers, and discusses the recent discovery of twist-bend, heliconical smectic phases. The shape of the dimers, whether linear or bent, plays a crucial role in determining their smectic behavior. Symmetric dimers exhibit microphase separation and monolayer smectic phases, while nonsymmetric dimers display intercalated smectic phases. Additionally, odd-membered dimers with sufficient curvature can exhibit twist-bend nematic phases. By utilizing empirical relationships derived for smectogenic and twist-bend nematogenic dimers, new twist-bend, heliconical smectic phases were designed and named SmCTB phases.

Masoumeh Orojloo et al.

Summary: A novel colorimetric Schiff-base receptor was successfully synthesized and used for the selective detection of Cr3+, Fe3+, and Al3+ cations, showing high sensitivity towards Fe3+ ions and rapid detection of HSO4- anions through absorption spectra and color changes. The coordination properties of HSO4- and Al3+ were confirmed by the (HNMR)-H-1 titration method.

Synthesis, structures and magnetic properties of copper(II) complexes with 1,2,3-triazole derivate as ligand: a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation from mononuclear to polymeric complex of copper(II)

Fan Ouyang et al.

Summary: A new mononuclear complex Cu(tdp)Br-2·MeCN has been synthesized, which can transform to a 1D coordination polymer under ambient conditions through an irreversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation process. The change in magnetic exchange couplings between the adjacent Cu(II) ions is observed along with the increase in dimensionality from 0 to 1D.

Synthetic, Mesomorphic, and DFT Investigations of New Nematogenic Polar Naphthyl Benzoate Ester Derivatives

Salma A. Al-Zahrani et al.

Summary: Four new non-symmetrical derivatives based on central naphthalene moiety were synthesized and investigated experimentally and theoretically. The results showed that all the synthesized analogues possess only an enantiotropic nematic (N) mesophase with a high thermal stability and broad range. Energy gap predictions confirmed the reactivity of the materials, with I-16/c derivative being more reactive than others.
