The imperative of arachidonic acid in early human development

Summary: This review discusses the role of arachidonic acid (ArA) in foetal and early growth and development. ArA is a principal component in the membrane lipids of various fetal cells and the placenta, and it has been shown to relax foetal mesenteric arteries. However, despite its importance, the recommendation to include ArA in infant formula was rejected by the European Food Standard Agency in 2014. Urgent re-evaluation of the importance of ArA in reproductive biology is needed.

Summary: Adequate intake of essential fatty acids (EFA) is critical in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. EFA deficiency is closely associated with the risk of pulmonary infection, a significant pathology in CF. Although some progress has been made in understanding the dysfunctional metabolic pathways in CF, further research is needed, particularly in investigating EFA metabolism in the liver. Adequate EFA concentrations are important for normal membrane structure and function, and investigating the effects of genotype and sex on fatty acid metabolism may support personalized nutritional therapies for CF management.

Summary: Leukotriene B4 (LTB4) is a lipid generated by the enzymatic oxidation of arachidonic acid and acts as a potent activator of leukocytes and other inflammatory cells. This review discusses the physiological and pathophysiological significance of LTB4 and its specific G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs): BLT1 and BLT2, and the potential of targeting these receptors for the treatment of various inflammatory diseases. The structure and post-translational modifications of BLT1 and BLT2 are also explored.
