Cancer-associated fibroblasts and resistance to anticancer therapies: status, mechanisms, and countermeasures

Bing Feng et al.

Summary: Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) play critical roles in the tumor microenvironment, including extracellular matrix remodeling, metabolic modulation, and angiogenesis. They interact with cancer cells and immune cells through the production of growth factors, cytokines, and chemokines. CAFs have the potential to modulate the sensitivity of anti-cancer therapies, making them potential targets for optimizing cancer treatments.

Neuronal differentiation potential of primary and immortalized adipose stem cells by photobiomodulation

Sajan George et al.

Summary: Adipose stem cells have the potential to differentiate into neurons, and autologous differentiated stem cells can be used in nerve replacement therapies. Genetically modified immortalized stem cells have the advantage of accessibility and ease of propagation. Photobiomodulation, a therapy using laser or light, can modulate stem cell proliferation and differentiation. This study compared the neuronal differentiation potential of primary and immortalized stem cells using photobiomodulation and found that primary stem cells demonstrated higher differentiation potential.

The promising interplay between sonodynamic therapy and nanomedicine

Roberto Canaparo et al.

Summary: Sonodynamic therapy is a non-invasive cancer treatment that uses sonosensitizers and ultrasound activation. However, the underlying mechanisms of the therapeutic activity are not well understood, limiting its clinical application. Physicochemical properties and cellular localization of sonosensitizers play important roles in predicting their bio-effects, and nanomedicine has shown potential in enhancing specific sonodynamic effects.

Structure and functions of Aggregation-Induced Emission-Photosensitizers in anticancer and antimicrobial theranostics

Heidi Abrahamse et al.

Summary: Photosensitizers with Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) have complex molecular structures that enable efficient generation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) while interacting with living cells, making them useful for fluorescence image-guided Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) against various cancers. They also have antimicrobial properties and can bind to viruses. However, they often have poor solubility and cellular toxicity, which can be improved by using suitable nanomaterials. AIE-photosensitizer nanoparticles offer precise tumor detection and targeted PDT in living systems, even with low power visible light.

Sonochemical dosimetry: A comparative study of Weissler, Fricke and terephthalic acid methods

Devika Bhai Rajamma et al.

Summary: This study compared the validity of different dosimetry methods in measuring the OH· yield generated by acoustic cavitation, and discussed possible mechanistic details and interfering reactions. Despite the formation of additional products consuming OH·, the reason for very low OH· yield obtained by terephthalic acid dosimetry method could not be justified, questioning its applicability in quantifying OH· yields.
