Feeding and Swallowing Characteristics of Children With Esophageal Atresia and Tracheoesophageal Fistula

Jennifer Maybee et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize feeding/swallowing difficulties in children with esophageal atresia and/or tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF) and evaluate associations among feeding difficulties, pharyngeal dysphagia (PD), and other aerodigestive evaluation findings. The study found that feeding difficulties are common in children with EA/TEF, and the types of feeding difficulties vary depending on the age of the child.

Predicting penetration-aspiration through quantitative swallow measures of children: a videofluoroscopic study

Isuru Dharmarathna et al.

Summary: This study found associations between quantitative fluoroscopic swallow measures and likelihood of penetration-aspiration in children, with pharyngeal constriction ratio being the most predictive factor. Risk of aspiration was more than 100 times higher when specific measures such as bolus clearance ratio and total pharyngeal transit time reached certain values.
