Comprehensive profiles of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in Chinese and African municipal wastewater treatment plants: New implications for removal efficiency

Lulin Jiang et al.

Summary: This study collected samples from municipal wastewater treatment plants in China, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Kenya to investigate the presence and removal efficiency of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) pollution. It was found that PFASs were present in both Chinese and African WWTPs, but the current treatment processes were ineffective at removing them, with 35 out of 54 WWTPs showing higher emissions than mass loads. The study concluded that the behavior of PFASs in WWTPs is influenced by various factors, as determined by machine learning models.

Disturbance in transcriptomic profile, proliferation and multipotency in human mesenchymal stem cells caused by hexafluoropropylene oxides*

Yifan Pan et al.

Summary: HFPO-TA and HFPO-DA have been shown to adversely affect human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, with effects on cell cycle processes and promotion of cell proliferation. They also inhibit osteogenic differentiation and increase the expression of core pluripotency regulator NANOG.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in the environment

Marina G. Evich et al.

Summary: PFAS has become a symbol of environmental contamination, attracting public, scientific, and regulatory concern. These compounds are globally distributed through atmospheric and aqueous releases, and they accumulate in biota through multiple pathways. Efforts to remediate PFAS-contaminated matrices are still in their early stages, with a focus on research targeting drinking water.

Exposure to GenX and Its Novel Analogs Disrupts Hepatic Bile Acid Metabolism in Male Mice

Hua Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxicity of GenX and its novel analogs compared to PFOA, and found that bile acid metabolism disorder may be a prominent adverse effect induced by exposure to these substances. Additionally, the results showed that PFMO2HpA may be a potential alternative to GenX.

Nontargeted Identification and Temporal Trends of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in a Fluorochemical Industrial Zone and Adjacent Taihu Lake

Jingzhi Yao et al.

Summary: This study discovered new species of PFASs in effluent and surface waters from a fluorochemical industrial zone. A novel compound called C7 HFPO-TA was found to have extremely high concentrations in the effluent and its concentration continued to grow in Taihu Lake. Further research on C7 HFPO-TA is urgently needed.

Exposure to GenX and its novel analogs disrupts fatty acid metabolism in male mice

Hua Guo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that PFECAs and its analogs exhibit similar hepatotoxicities in mice, showing similar effects at the same cumulative liver concentration, with PFMO2HpA displaying lower hepatotoxicity compared to GenX at the same dose. Dimensionality reduction analysis is found to be a useful strategy for analyzing samples exposed to multiple compounds at different doses.

Surface and foam property of perfluoroalkyl polyoxyethylene ether phosphate salt in aqueous-ethanol system

Bo Ning et al.

Summary: A new surfactant FEP-Na was synthesized for use in a 50% ethanol-water mixed system, showing good foam properties. High concentration solutions with high surface activity have lower foam stability, and the phenomenon of bubble burst is dominated by coalescence. This research provides insights into the mechanism of foam stability in the ethanol-water mixed system at a concentration of 50%.

The surface properties of amine oxides with a fluoroether chain

Longhao Dai et al.

Summary: The study synthesized eight amine oxides with a fluoroether chain as potential alternatives to PFOA and PFOS. The surface tensions and critical micelle concentrations of the fluoroether amine oxides were found to be comparable to perfluorooctyl analogues but much lower than perfluorohexyl and hydrocarbon analogues, indicating their promising potential as surfactants.

Surface adsorption and foam performance of sodium perfluoroalkyl polyoxyethylene ether sulfate in ethanol-water mixed system

Bo Ning et al.

Summary: In this study, a new fluorocarbon surfactant FES-Na was synthesized and its interface adsorption behavior and foam performance in 50% ethanol were studied. The mechanism of foam stability follows the classic double-layer film theory. The results demonstrate that FES-Na can generate stable foam in 50% ethanol, making it an alternative foaming agent in the ethanol-water system.
