Dynamic In Situ Monitoring of the Salt Counter-ion Effect on Surfactant Effectiveness Using Reconfigurable Janus Emulsions

Marko Pavlovic et al.

Summary: A method for visualizing and quantifying surfactant effectiveness in different electrolyte environments using reconfigurable Janus emulsions as optical probes is presented. The effect of different types and concentrations of salt counter-ions on the surfactant surface excess was investigated for both ionic and non-ionic surfactants. It was found that the interfacial tensions of the ionic surfactants varied significantly, while the effect on the non-ionic surfactant was less pronounced. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of Janus emulsions as powerful tools for studying surfactant properties at liquid interfaces.

Modification of amphiphilic block copolymers for responsive and biologically active surfactants in complex droplets

Tyler J. Durkin et al.

Summary: This study presents the application of amphiphilic block copolymer surfactants in sensing devices. The composition and molecular weight of the surfactants were found to affect their interfacial properties, and conformational changes of the polymers led to variations in interfacial tension reductions. By modifying the surfactants with trypsin, its functionality was retained. The modified surfactants were successfully used in an active complex emulsion framework, which allowed for control of functionality through shielding of active compounds.

Multiplexed and continuous microfluidic sensors using dynamic complex droplets

Baishali Barua et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrated a real-time optical sensing platform using poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microfluidics and complex droplets as sensing materials. Changes in interfacial tension were transduced into optical signals through a mechanism called directional emission. By varying the interfacial functionalization and fluorescent dye with characteristic wavelength, we generated multiple formulations of droplets and obtained differential responses to stimuli that alter interfacial tensions (i.e., composition of surfactants, pH).

Stability and release mechanisms of double emulsions loaded with bioactive compounds; a critical review

Fatemeh Heidari et al.

Summary: Double emulsions, dispersion systems where liquid droplets of one dispersed liquid are further dispersed in another liquid, are widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries for co-encapsulation of hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds. However, their stability and release mechanisms pose challenges, and studying factors affecting stability and release can help optimize their formulation for different industries.

Interfacial Rearrangements of Block Copolymer Micelles Toward Gelled Liquid-Liquid Interfaces with Adjustable Viscoelasticity

Quinn Prasser et al.

Summary: Although amphiphiles are widely used to modify interfaces, the process of interfacial reorganization remains unclear in many cases. In this study, a block copolymer system with electrostatic interactions was used to investigate the reorganization kinetics of adsorbed micelles at the water/n-decane interface. The results showed that electrostatic interactions slowed down the reorganization process, allowing for the observation of micellar flattening and merging towards a physically interconnected monolayer. The study also demonstrated that the rheological properties of the interface can be manipulated through redox reactions, and the formation of Prussian blue can stiffen the interface.

Detection of PFAS and Fluorinated Surfactants Using Differential Behaviors at Interfaces of Complex Droplets

Vivian Trinh et al.

Summary: Contamination of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water supplies has serious health and environmental consequences. However, there are few suitable and rapid on-site methods for monitoring PFAS concentrations. In this study, a novel and rapid method for detecting perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was developed using the differential behaviors of PFAS at interfaces. The method is based on the measurement of surface and interfacial tensions, which revealed that PFAS preferentially assemble at the water-fluorocarbon oil interface. The change in fluorescence emission intensity correlated with the concentrations of PFAS, demonstrating the potential for on-site PFAS detection.

Salt Weakens Intermicellar Interactions and Structuring in Bulk Solutions and Foam Films

Shang Gao et al.

Summary: The addition of salt significantly alters the stratification drainage process in micellar foam films formulated with ionic surfactants, leading to smaller step sizes and fewer steps in the thinning of the films. The long-range correlations between micelles are weakened, resulting in a rich nanoscopic topography and smaller intermicellar distances.

Facile Monitoring of Water Hardness Levels Using Responsive Complex Emulsions

Marko Pavlovic et al.

Summary: A novel method for monitoring mineral content of drinking water using responsive complex emulsions was reported, showing changes in droplet morphology to reflect variations in surfactant effectiveness due to metal cation addition. The study demonstrated that salt concentration and valency can influence the extent of droplet response, with divalent cations resulting in a more pronounced response. This device concept may provide a simple and cost-effective alternative for rapid monitoring of water hardness levels.

Dual-Stimuli Responsive Single-Chain Polymer Folding via Intrachain Complexation of Tetramethoxyazobenzene and β-Cyclodextrin

Daniel C. Lee et al.

Summary: This study focused on synthesizing and characterizing a triblock polymer with asymmetric tetramethoxyazobenzene (TMAB) and beta-cyclodextrin functionalization, demonstrating its photoresponsive, self-contained folding behavior in an aqueous system. The reversibility of TMAB photoisomerization, thermal stability, and inclusion complex formation were evaluated, showing promising potential for functional material applications. The decrease in photoisomerization quantum yield of the dual-functionalized polymer compared to the isolated chromophore confirmed the formation of the inclusion complex between TMAB and beta-cyclodextrin.
