When does an impacting drop stop bouncing?

Vatsal Sanjay et al.

Summary: Using numerical simulations, we investigate how viscous stresses and gravity inhibit drop rebound by opposing capillarity. We find that the initial spreading stage can be decoupled from the later retraction and take-off, and propose a criterion for the transition from bouncing to non-bouncing regime. The criterion is in excellent agreement with the numerical results. We also elucidate the mechanisms of bouncing inhibition in the heavy and viscous drop limiting regimes.

Fundamental Fluid Dynamics Challenges in Inkjet Printing

Detlef Lohse

Summary: This review provides an overview of the fluid dynamics of inkjet printing and discusses the main challenges for present and future research. The challenges on the printhead side include the flow inside the printhead, bubble entrainment, meniscus dynamics, wetting phenomena, and jet formation. On the receiving substrate side, challenges include droplet impact, merging, wetting, evaporation, and drying. Optimizing the process and materials as a whole is crucial for achieving efficient inkjet printing.

Interfacial dynamics of viscous droplets impacting a superhydrophobic candle soot surface: Overview and comparison

Bhaskarjyoti Sarma et al.

Summary: Fractal superhydrophobic surfaces coated with carbon soot nanoparticles offer an alternative to the time-consuming and expensive fabrication methods of other superhydrophobic surfaces. This study investigates the wetting behavior of these surfaces under different droplet impact conditions and demonstrates their superior performance compared to other non-wetting surfaces.

Droplet Impact on a Micro-structured Hydrophilic Surface: Maximum Spreading, Jetting, and Partial Rebound

Brooklyn Asai et al.

Summary: In this paper, the impact of droplets on a partially wetting hydrophilic substrate is experimentally studied. The findings show that the microstructured hydrophilic surface exhibits similar impact outcomes as hydrophobic surfaces. A regime map is constructed to illustrate the overall effects of impact velocity and viscosity. The results indicate that there are power law relationships between different parameters, and the importance of viscosity on the impact outcomes increases with increasing fluid viscosity.

Impact Forces of Water Drops Falling on Superhydrophobic Surfaces

Bin Zhang et al.

Summary: A liquid drop deforms and spreads on a rigid substrate after impact, and it can retract and jump off if the substrate is nonwetting. This study reveals distinct peaks in the temporal evolution of the normal force during impact and the previously unknown jump-off process. The second peak coincides with the formation of a Worthington jet.

Fundamental study of porcine drip bloodstains on fabrics: Blood droplet impact and wicking dynamics

Fujun Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the formation of drip bloodstains on fabrics by analyzing blood droplet impact and wicking dynamics. It reveals that subsequent wicking greatly alters the bloodstains induced by impact, with the stain factor depending strongly on impact velocity. The influence of droplet impact on subsequent wicking is quantified, and the wicking coefficient scales with We(-0.34).

Miscibility and wettability: how interfacial tension influences droplet impact onto thin wall films

Ronan Bernard et al.

Summary: Experimental study on the influence of miscibility and liquid wettability during droplet impact onto thin wall films reveals that differences are related to the interfacial tension of the droplet/wall-film liquid pairs. Interfacial tension plays a significant role in energy storage and crown kinetics during the impact process.

Jetting in finite-amplitude, free, capillary-gravity waves

Saswata Basak et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the mechanics of jet formation from capillary-gravity waves on a liquid pool surface in a cylindrical container, showing that linear theory is inadequate in describing the process. Nonlinear theory predicts energy transfer and numerical simulations reveal the jet originates from a small dimple at the wave trough. The theory qualitatively describes jet overshoot and liquid velocity/pressure fields, but does not capture the evolution of the dimple or the thinning of the jet neck leading to pinchoff.

Numerical investigation of droplet impact on a solid superhydrophobic surface

Wen Li et al.

Summary: The impact of microscale water droplets on a solid superhydrophobic surface was numerically investigated. The study found that the maximum spreading parameter increases with ambient temperature for droplets impacting with constant velocity and diameter. As Weber and Reynolds numbers increase, the impact transitions into a doughnut-breakup regime, forming a toroidal shape and central cavity.

Macrodrop-Impact-Mediated Fluid Microdispensing

Summary: The authors proposed a low-frequency micro dispensing technique based on the Rayleigh-Plateau instability, which can produce single microdrops of low-viscosity liquids with a tunable volume from picoliters to nanoliters. This novel dispensing strategy covers most laboratory solvents and does not require small-dimension nozzles/tips.

Jet Dynamics Associated with Drop Impact on Micropillared Substrate

Brooklyn Asai et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the jetting phenomenon associated with droplet impact on a hydrophilic micropillared substrate and found similarities between this capillary jetting and another well-known jetting phenomenon from bubble bursting. By deriving scaling laws for various jet parameters, it was observed that with proper scaling factors, the evolution of jet profile can collapse into a master profile for different fluids and impact velocities. The time dependence of the necking diameter before jet breakup follows a power law with an exponent of around 2/3, while other jet parameters did not exhibit a clear pattern of power law relationship with time dependence.
