Research on the horizontal reduction effect of urban roadside green belt on atmospheric particulate matter in a semi-arid area

Aixia Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the horizontal abatement effects of green belts on atmospheric particulate matter in urban roadside green belts in semi-arid areas. The results showed that the abatement efficiency of green belts varied for different particle sizes, with a stronger abatement rate for larger particles. The rate was significantly correlated with microclimatic factors such as temperature and humidity. The abatement rate of green belts on atmospheric particulate matter varied with the increase of horizontal distance in a single-peak or double-peak pattern, with the best abatement effect at a distance of 45m. The arbor-shrub-herb structure had the strongest abatement ability. Support Vector Machines were used to create a prediction model that improved the horizontal abatement ability of green belts on atmospheric PM.

Street trees and crime: What characteristics of trees and streetscapes matter

Jian Lin et al.

Summary: This study conducted an analysis on the impact of street trees on crime in New York City. The results showed that characteristics such as tree canopy cover, species diversity, and streetscape greenery were associated with lower crime rates, while the proportion of small-sized trees was positively correlated with crime rates. Additionally, tree health, proportion of harmful tree guards, and proportion of trees with trunk problems displayed dual associations with crime rates.

Street-level green spaces support a key urban population of the threatened Hispaniolan parakeet Psittacara chloropterus

Matthew Geary et al.

Summary: Although urbanization poses a major threat to biodiversity, urban areas can also be crucial in protecting endangered species like parrots. The Hispaniolan Parakeet population thrives in the capital city of Santo Domingo, positively correlated with tree species richness and green patches within the city. Most breeding of parakeets occurs in old buildings, emphasizing the significance of parks and gardens in providing feeding resources for this vulnerable species.

Relative importance of quantitative and qualitative aspects of urban green spaces in promoting health

Liqing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationships between different indicators of urban green space (UGS) provision and self-reported mental and general health in Singapore. Canopy cover and perceived usage quality were significantly associated with positive mental health, while visual greenness at a 100 m scale had a significant relationship with mental health. The findings suggest the importance of measuring both objective and subjective attributes of UGS provision for urban greening initiatives.

A study on the impact of Visible Green Index and vegetation structures on brain wave change in residential landscape

Huaizhen Zhu et al.

Summary: Through a virtual reality experiment, the study found that a VGI of 60% to 80% with a three-layer vegetation structure is most beneficial for the human brain, while a two-layer vegetation structure with a VGI above 80% has the greatest instantaneous weakening effect. Additionally, residential landscapes significantly reduce delta and theta brain waves in humans.
