Enhanced soil potential N2O emissions by land-use change are linked to AOB-amoA and nirK gene abundances and denitrifying enzyme activity in subtropics

Haikuo Zhang et al.

Summary: Converting natural forests to tea plantations in subtropical China directly increases soil inorganic nitrogen concentration, leading to increased nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. This study also found that the increase in denitrifying enzyme activity and nirS + nirK gene abundance directly regulated N2O emissions, while the effects of AOB-amoA gene abundance and inorganic nitrogen concentration on N2O emissions were indirect.

Land-use-driven change in soil labile carbon affects microbial community composition and function

Haikuo Zhang et al.

Summary: Converting natural forests to plantations can lead to significant loss of soil organic carbon and threaten soil microbial communities. This study investigated the impact of converting natural forests to a tea plantation on soil organic carbon storage, microbial community composition, C-degrading enzyme activity, and the abundance of C-degrading microbial functional genes. The findings suggest that the shift in microbial community composition and function associated with land-use change is mediated by changes in the labile carbon pool.

DISTRIBUTION OF MINERAL ELEMENTS IN THE SOIL AND IN TEA PLANTS (CAMELLIA SINENSIS)

Yishu Peng et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the mineral element content in the soil and tea plants at a tea farm in Guizhou, China. The results showed that the tea plants had a strong ability to absorb Ca and S, and the content of low reabsorption proficiency mineral elements was higher in older leaves compared to organs with active growth. The soil was found to be the primary source of mineral elements for the tea plants.

Summary: Tea plantations in the Central North of Iran cover a large area and have experienced severe soil erosion issues. The study used Cs-137 technique and the RUSLE model to assess soil erosion rates, emphasizing the necessity of adopting soil conservation measures and sustainable land-use practices for tea farms.

Phosphorus fractionation related to environmental risks resulting from intensive vegetable cropping and fertilization in a subtropical region

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: Overuse of phosphorus fertilizer can lead to phosphorus accumulation in soil in vegetable production, increasing the risk of phosphorus runoff and leaching. Long-term use of phosphorus fertilizer in intensive vegetable production can result in phosphorus surpluses and environmental risks. Therefore, reducing phosphorus fertilizer input is necessary to maintain soil phosphorus levels within an optimal range.

Fe/Al (hydr)oxides engineered biochar for reducing phosphorus leaching from a fertile calcareous soil

Yutao Peng et al.

Summary: The study developed an Fe/Al (hydr)oxides modified biochar (FA-BC) to reduce P leaching in calcareous soils, demonstrating its higher efficiency in P adsorption compared to raw biochar. The application of FA-BC significantly decreased total P leaching, while maintaining adequate levels of bioavailable P in the soil. Chemical sequestration tests and analyses further showed the transformation of labile Ca-P fractions into stabilized Fe/Al-P complexes, highlighting the superior P retention ability of FA-BC amended soils.

Mapping the deforestation footprint of nations reveals growing threat to tropical forests

Nguyen Tien Hoang et al.

Summary: Deforestation is driven by global demand for commodities, posing a significant threat to biodiversity. While some developed countries have gained net forest cover domestically, their imports have contributed to increased deforestation, particularly in tropical forests. Hotspots of deforestation in international trade coincide with biodiversity hotspots, highlighting the need for transnational efforts to address the issue.

Fertilizer overuse in Chinese smallholders due to lack of fixed inputs

Chenchen Ren et al.

Summary: The study found that the low ratio of fixed inputs to total inputs is the key factor leading to over-fertilization in smallholder farms, resulting in nutrient-unbalanced fertilization, low agricultural income ratio, and an increase in cash crops which further exacerbate fertilizer overuse.
