Assessment of joint line obliquity and its related frontal deformity using long-standing radiographs

Tianshun Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of radiographic techniques and osteoarthritis grade on measurements of knee joint line obliquity (KJLO) and KJLO-related frontal deformity. It was found that measurements of JLOAF, JLOAM, JLOAT, MJLA, JLCA, and HKA were influenced by single-leg/double-leg standing, while JLOAF, JLOAM, and JLOAT were also affected by bipedal distance in double-leg standing, and JLCA was affected by osteoarthritis grade. MPTA measurement of knee joint obliquity was not affected by standing position, bipedal distance, or osteoarthritis grade, and had excellent reliability. Thus, MPTA is proposed as the preferable KJLO measurement method for clinical practice and future research.

Analysis of the determinant factor of the medial joint space width after medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy

Ho Won Jeong et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the factors affecting the medial joint space width (MJSW) after medial open wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOW-HTO). The change in MJSW was analyzed and correlated with parameters such as weight-bearing line ratio (WBLR), hip knee ankle angle (HKA), joint line convergence angle (JLCA), etc. The JLCA and WBLR were found to be major contributing factors to the change in MJSW, and cartilage status and clinical outcome were not related to MJSW.

Excessively Increased Joint-Line Obliquity After Medial Opening-Wedge High Tibial Osteotomy Is Associated With Inferior Radiologic and Clinical Outcomes: What Is Permissible Joint-Line Obliquity

Joo Sung Kim et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the permissible joint-line obliquity (JLO) based on radiologic and clinical outcomes with midterm follow-up after medial open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO). The study found that a larger medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA) resulted in a sudden increase in joint-line orientation angle (JLOA) and poor clinical outcomes.

Changes in joint space width over time and risk factors for deterioration of joint space width after medial opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy

Man Soo Kim et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in joint space width (JSW) over time after medial opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO) and identify risk factors for deterioration of JSW. JSW gradually increased on standing AP and Rosenberg views until postoperative 3 years after MOWHTO, with undercorrection being closely related to JSW deterioration and affecting clinical outcomes.

Risk factors and preventive strategy for excessive coronal inclination of tibial plateau following medial opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy

Sueen Sohn et al.

Summary: Preoperative joint line obliquity >= 3 degrees and joint line convergence angle >= 5 degrees were significant risk factors for excessive coronal inclination of tibial plateau following MOWHTO. Surgeons should consider alternative osteotomy techniques if both of these risk factors are present preoperatively in MOWHTO candidates.

An Increase in Medial Joint Space Width After Medial Open-Wedge High Tibial Osteotomy Is Associated With an Increase in the Postoperative Weight-Bearing Line Ratio Rather Than With Cartilage Regeneration: Comparative Analysis of Patients Who Underwent Second-Look Arthroscopic Assessment

Hyun-Soo Moon et al.

Summary: The increase in medial JSW after MOWHTO is associated with an increase in the postoperative weight-bearing line ratio, not with cartilage regeneration. Obtaining adequate correction to maintain a postoperative WBLR within 60% to 70% is desirable for postoperative changes in medial JSW and clinical outcomes.

Summary: Lateral closing and medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomies are effective in correcting varus malalignment of the knee, with good short-term and mid-term results. Analysis of 30 studies showed high survival rates and improved functional scores in patients after more than 10 years of follow-up.

Summary: The study revealed that changes in knee joint line obliquity significantly affect tibiofemoral subluxation and pressure distribution. A 4-degree change in JLO resulted in a 15mm range of subluxation, causing significant alterations in the location of joint contact pressures.

Association between changes in hip-knee-ankle angle and hindfoot alignment after total knee arthroplasty for varus knee osteoarthritis

Naicheng Diao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between changes in hip-knee-ankle (HKA) angle and hindfoot alignment after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for varus knee osteoarthritis. The results showed that HFA was significantly adjusted by 3 months after TKA, and the change in HFA was weakly correlated with the change in HKA angle, with age impacting this correlation. In patients under 65 years old, there was a greater correlation between changes in HFA and HKA angle, while no correlation was observed in patients above 65 years old.
