Wastewater monitoring in tourist cities as potential sentinel sites for near real-time dynamics of imported SARS-CoV-2 variants

Jatuwat Sangsanont et al.

Summary: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) can complement clinical surveillance of the distribution of SARS-CoV-2 and its variants in populations. Representative wastewater treatment plants in Bangkok and Phuket, Thailand, can serve as sentinel sites for early detection of new variants entering the country. WBE has the potential to support tourism-dependent economies and maintain public health protection through wastewater surveillance.

Comparative analysis of Adsorption-Extraction (AE) and Nanotrap® Magnetic Virus Particles (NMVP) workflows for the recovery of endogenous enveloped and non-enveloped viruses in wastewater

Warish Ahmed et al.

Summary: Two virus concentration methods, AE and NMVP, along with extraction kits were used to quantify PMMoV and SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater samples. The results showed that NMVP workflow produced higher PMMoV concentrations in 58% of samples, while AE workflow produced higher SARS-CoV-2 concentrations in 69% of samples. The concentrations of PMMoV were not sensitive to turbidity, but the concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 were strongly correlated with turbidity.

Microbial source tracking of untreated human wastewater and animal scats in urbanized estuarine waters

Warish Ahmed et al.

Summary: This study assessed the performance characteristics of marker genes for human wastewater and animal scat, including host sensitivity, host specificity, and concentration. Several human wastewater-associated marker genes exhibited absolute host sensitivity and specificity, while only one horse scat-associated marker gene showed absolute host sensitivity. Concentrations of certain marker genes were higher in human wastewater samples, indicating their potential for detecting diluted human fecal pollution in estuarine waters. It is necessary to test animal scat-associated marker genes along with human wastewater-associated marker genes to accurately determine fecal sources in environmental waters.

Wastewater-based prediction of COVID-19 cases using a highly sensitive SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection method combined with mathematical modeling

Hiroki Ando et al.

Summary: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has the potential to predict COVID-19 cases. A highly sensitive method (EPISENS-M) was developed, allowing SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection from wastewater when new COVID-19 cases exceed a certain threshold. A longitudinal WBE study conducted in Sapporo City, Japan, showed a strong correlation between C-RNA and newly reported COVID-19 cases. A mathematical model was developed to estimate newly reported cases using C-RNA data and clinical data, with high precision in predicting future cases.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence of influenza A and respiratory syncytial viruses elucidated by wastewater-based epidemiology

Hiroki Ando et al.

Summary: Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a decrease in the prevalence of Influenza A virus (IAV) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) based on clinical surveillance. However, it is important to consider potential biases in obtaining an accurate overview of infectious diseases in a community. This study quantified IAV and RSV RNA in wastewater collected from three wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Sapporo, Japan, and found a significant decrease in the detection ratios of IAV and RSV after the COVID-19 prevalence.

Simultaneous Detection of SARS-CoV-2 and Influenza Virus in Wastewater of Two Cities in Southeastern Germany, January to May 2022

Roger Dumke et al.

Summary: Wastewater monitoring of viruses can provide valuable insights into their circulation in the human population. A study conducted in Germany investigated the presence of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses A/B RNA in raw wastewater samples from two treatment plants using polyethylene glycol precipitation and reverse transcription-quantitative PCR. The study found a high incidence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in all analyzed samples, as well as the presence of influenza viruses A and B in a significant proportion of samples. This study highlights the potential of wastewater-based monitoring for tracking the epidemiology of influenza.
