Fabrication of Single-Crystalline CoCrFeNi Thin Films by DC Magnetron Sputtering: A Route to Surface Studies of High-Entropy Alloys

Holger Schwarz et al.

Summary: High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have garnered attention in material science due to their limitless composition possibilities. Recently, their use as tunable electrocatalysts has become a focus. However, there is limited research on fundamental properties of HEA surfaces, such as atomic and electronic structure, surface segregation and diffusion, and adsorption. This lack of research is due to the limited availability of single-crystalline samples.

Phase formation in CrFeCoNi nitride thin films

Smita G. Rao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of nitrogen content on phase formation in CrFeCoNi thin films using theoretical and experimental methods. The results show that when the nitrogen content is x<=0.22, the film stabilizes in a face-centered cubic structure, while for x>0.33, it stabilizes in a NaCl B1 structure. However, when the nitrogen content is an intermediate value of x=0.22, phase segregation occurs in the film grown at higher temperatures. These findings are important for understanding the phase formation mechanisms in multicomponent ceramics and for correlating mechanical properties with crystal structure in films.

Atomistic mechanisms underlying plasticity and crack growth in ceramics: a case study of AlN/TiN superlattices

Nikola Koutna et al.

Summary: This study investigates the plasticity and crack growth mechanisms of B1 AlN(001)/TiN(001) superlattices under mechanical loading. The simulations reveal an anisotropic response of the superlattice in different tensile directions and suggest that controlling the thicknesses of the superlattice components can hinder crack growth.

Effect of nitrogen vacancies on the growth, dislocation structure, and decomposition of single crystal epitaxial (Ti1-xAlx)Ny thin films

K. M. Calamba et al.

Summary: The research investigates how varying nitrogen vacancies affect the growth, microstructure, spinodal decomposition, and hardness values of predominantly single crystal cubic phase c-(Ti1-xAlx)N-y films. It was found that higher nitrogen vacancies promote phase segregation, while lower nitrogen vacancies result in increased film hardness.

Mechanical properties of Cantor alloys driven by additional elements: a review

Zhihua Zeng et al.

Summary: The Cantor alloy, known for its excellent ductility and fracture toughness, has the potential to be a high-entropy alloy but is limited by low strength, which can be enhanced by additional elements. This study reviews existing developments to identify additional elements that can improve the mechanical properties of the Cantor alloy, summarizes findings related to its mechanical properties and additional elements, and discusses theoretical strengthening values of various mechanisms. Recommendations are provided for further breakthroughs in improving the mechanical properties of the Cantor alloy by investigating the influence of additional elements on its phase structure.

The growth of a multi-principal element (CoCrFeMnNi) oxynitride film by direct current magnetron sputtering using air as reactive gas

G. Radnoczi et al.

Summary: CoCrFeMnNi multi-principal element alloy films were grown by direct current magnetron sputtering in a mixture of argon and air. Varying the air fraction resulted in changes in the phase state of the growing films. Higher air fractions led to the formation of more distinct oxynitride structures, with oxygen being preferentially incorporated into the growing structures.
