Fingerprinting Metabolic Activity and Tissue Integrity of 3D Lung Cancer Spheroids under Gold Nanowire Treatment

Hadi Hashemzadeh et al.

Summary: The inadequacy of animal models has led to the development of improved in vitro models, such as 3D multicellular spheroids, for drug efficacy assessments. While these models provide physiological relevance and meet high-throughput and low-cost requirements for drug discovery, their application in nanotoxicity testing is still in its early stages due to limited penetration and uptake rates. Comparative studies between 2D monolayer cultures and 3D spheroids revealed distinct cellular responses to gold nanowires (AuNWs) treatment, emphasizing the need for more physiologically relevant tissue models for investigating nanomaterial-biology interactions.

Catechin Metabolites along with Curcumin Inhibit Proliferation and Induce Apoptosis in Cervical Cancer Cells by Regulating VEGF Expression In-Vitro

Elnaz Khojaste et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of catechin metabolites and curcumin on cervical cancer cells were evaluated. The results showed that they could reduce VEGF expression, regulate the levels of oncogenic miRNAs (miR-210 and miR-21), and tumor-suppressor miRNA (miR-126), leading to reduced cell survival through induction of apoptosis. This suggests that catechin metabolites and curcumin could be a promising therapeutic approach for cervical cancer in women.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
