Kilogram-Scale Production of Biodegradable Poly(butylene carbonate): Molecular Weight Dependence of Physical Properties and Enhanced Crystallization by Nucleating Agent

Ying Lu et al.

Summary: A series of kilogram-scale DMC-based biodegradable PBCs with different molecular weight gradients were successfully synthesized through a facile melt polycondensation reaction. The molecular weight was found to significantly influence the physical characteristics of PBC, and PBC with a higher molecular weight exhibited excellent mechanical strength and elongation at break. Furthermore, the introduction of magnesium mandelate as a nucleating agent greatly accelerated the crystallization of PBC and showed a prominent nucleation activity.

Tailoring the Barrier Properties of PLA: A State-of-the-Art Review for Food Packaging Applications

Stefania Marano et al.

Summary: The production of petroleum-based packaging materials has caused ecological problems. Biodegradable films, particularly poly(lactide) (PLA), have been researched as sustainable alternatives, but further improvements are needed. The mass transfer properties of materials play a crucial role in maintaining food quality and safety. This study aims to review strategies to enhance the barrier properties of PLA-based materials for the design of packaging materials with desired mass transfer properties.

Enhanced seawater degradation through copolymerization with diglycolic acid: Synthesis, microstructure, degradation mechanism and modification for antibacterial packaging

Ying Tian et al.

Summary: Marine plastic pollution is a global challenge that requires new progress in the field of degradable polymers. This study prepared a series of polyesters that can serve as eco-friendly substitutes for existing packaging materials. These polyesters have superior mechanical and degradation properties compared to commercial biodegradable polymers. Additionally, they exhibit good antibacterial ability when combined with a small number of antibacterial agents.

Even-Odd Effect in Aliphatic Polycarbonates with Different Chain Lengths: from Poly (Hexamethylene Carbonate) to Poly (Dodecamethylene Carbonate)

Ricardo A. Perez-Camargo et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the thermal properties and crystalline structure of aliphatic polycarbonates synthesized by organocatalysis are influenced by the number of methylene groups in their repeating units, showing a clear even-odd effect and a saturation of this effect. The even-odd region displayed differences in melting temperatures and unit cell structures between even and odd samples, while the saturation region showed a linear change in thermal properties with increasing methylene groups. The memory effect was weakened as the number of methylene groups increased, leading to a shift in conformation towards a PE-like structure.

Simultaneous Measurement of Glass-Transition Temperature and Crystallinity of As-Prepared Polymeric Films from Restitution

Jinwon Park et al.

Summary: The study developed a new technique to simultaneously determine T-g and X-c by measuring the restitution of a ball on an intact polymer film or sheet. Experimental results demonstrated that T-g is the onset of the decrease in restitution, and X-c is the minimum restitution for semi-crystalline polymers.

Lizhong Zhou et al.

Summary: Long-chain aliphatic polyesters with PE-like structure and properties were synthesized through melt polycondensation. They showed high intrinsic viscosity, PE-like crystal structure, and excellent tensile behavior. Long-chain polyesters exhibited chain length-dependent biodegradability and superior performance compared to PBAT copolyester.

A Fresh Look at the Structures of Nylons and the Brill Transition

Bernard Lotz

Summary: The common knowledge of nylon crystal structures dates back to the early 1950s, with the description of alpha phase and Brill transition. Recent structural analyses have provided new insights into these long-standing structural puzzles, revealing variants featuring pleated chain conformations and a dynamic interconversion mechanism for the Brill transition.
