How meso shear chains bridge multiscale shear behaviors in granular materials: A preliminary study

Jiaying Liu et al.

Summary: The shear chain concept is used in this study to investigate shear characteristics in granular materials at different scales and to explore the correlations between microscopic and macroscopic shear behaviors. The results show that the orientation of shear bands is influenced by the sample aspect ratio, while the orientation of shear chains only depends on the stress state. It is conjectured that shear bands are formed by a collection of crossing shear chains at the meso scale.

Lifespan dynamics of cluster conformations in stationary regimes in granular materials

Na Deng et al.

Summary: We examine stationary regimes in granular materials from a dynamical systems theory perspective. The results suggest that the reorganization rate of specific cluster conformations in the critical state regime depends on strain magnitudes and confining pressure levels.

On the attraction power of critical state in granular materials

Na Deng et al.

Summary: This paper offers a fresh perspective on the classic concept of critical state in granular materials by suggesting that CS can be defined through a single proportional strain test. A comparison between proportional strain tests and biaxial tests shows that CS can act as an attractor, indicating that granular materials can preserve their properties while undergoing strain loading.

Cross-diffusion waves resulting from multiscale, multi-physics instabilities: theory

Klaus Regenauer-Lieb et al.

Summary: The proposed multiscale approach couples different physics processes by analyzing discrete phenomena triggered by cross-diffusion waves. These waves exhibit complex interactions upon collision and are characterized by wavenumber and speed defined by the coefficients of the coupled reaction-cross-diffusion equations.
