Multi-objective design optimization of stent-grafts for the aortic arch

Zongchao Liu et al.

Summary: This study designed and verified an aortic stent-graft by optimizing a specially constructed commercial descending stent-graft. The optimization process, using surrogate modeling and multi-objective genetic algorithms, resulted in improved flexibility and radial support force of the stent-graft. The results provide guidelines and a feasible method for designing aortic arch stent-grafts.

Comparative study between 1-way and 2-way coupled fluid-structure interaction in numerical simulation of aortic arch

Mario Luis F. Da Silva et al.

Summary: This study compared 1-way and 2-way coupled fluid-structure interaction methods for aortic arch aneurysms. The results showed that the 1-way approach tends to underestimate von Mises stress, displacement, and strain, while overestimating flow field variables during systole. In contrast, the 2-way approach provides more accurate results due to the strong iteration between the fluid and the arterial wall.

Comparative study of arterial wall models for numerical fluid-structure interaction simulation of aortic arch aneurysms

Mario Luis Ferreira da Silva et al.

Summary: This study compares different arterial wall models for an aneurysm in the aortic arch and finds that a softer model favors recirculation and reduces wall shear stress, but may overestimate the risk of intraluminal thrombus formation; a stiffer model may overestimate the risk of rupture.

On the importance of tunica intima in the aging aorta: a three-layered in silico model for computing wall stresses in abdominal aortic aneurysms

Mario de Lucio et al.

Summary: Experimental data on human aortic tissue show that the innermost layer of the aorta becomes load-bearing in aged arteries and arteries with non-atherosclerotic intimal thickening. However, there is limited computational study on abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) considering the mechanical contribution of the three layers. This paper proposes a three-layered finite element model and analyzes the mechanical contributions of the adventitia, media, and intima in three-layered aneurysms.

Fluid structure interaction study in model abdominal aortic aneurysms: Influence of shape and wall motion

Nimmy Thankom Philip et al.

Summary: Aneurysms are bulges in arteries and understanding their rupture risk is crucial. Studies show that the (D-max) to height ratio (DHr) is the most significant shape index influencing hemodynamic parameters, making it a potential predictor of rupture risk. Additionally, turbulence intensity in diseased segments and the distal end of aneurysm is predicted to be greater than 1.5% based on investigations using numerical simulations.

A systematic approach to further improve stent-graft performance

Zongchao Liu et al.

Summary: A new stent-graft design with slits was proposed to improve sealing effect and maintain blood flow in supra-aortic branches during thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). Mechanical evaluations and fluid dynamic analysis showed satisfactory results, suggesting potential applicability in dealing with technical difficulties at the aortic arch.

Fluid-structure interaction: Insights into biomechanical implications of endograft after thoracic endovascular aortic repair

Yonghui Qiao et al.

Summary: TEVAR is the most effective treatment for aortic diseases, and this study evaluates the biomechanical implications of the implanted endograft after surgery. Using a novel computational framework, the study found that endograft implantation weakens the aorta's buffer function and reduces mean energy loss by 19.1%. The interaction between blood flow, endograft, and aortic wall is crucial for physiologically accurate hemodynamics post-TEVAR. The deformation of the aortic wall is responsible for the major energy loss in blood flow.
