Investigation of the structure and mechanical properties of a novel dental graded glass/zirconia ceramic

Ming Zhou et al.

Summary: Constructing a novel graded glass/zirconia ceramic by utilizing the interdiffusion between dense zirconia and a novel lithium disilicate glass in the SiO2-Li2O-Al2O3 system is a promising solution to reduce cracking and delamination of bilayered zirconia prosthesis. The constructed graded glass/zirconia structure exhibited obvious gradient characteristics in microstructure, glass content, and mechanical properties. The study elucidated the mechanism of the evolution of the graded structure and the change of strength, providing a promising strategy to improve the interface stability of bilayered zirconia restoration.

Mechanical stability of dental CAD-CAM restoration materials made of monolithic zirconia, lithium disilicate, and lithium disilicateestrengthened aluminosilicate glass-ceramic with and without fatigue conditions

Nadin Al-Haj Husain et al.

Summary: This in vitro study compared the flexural strength and aging conditions of CAD-CAM zirconia, lithium disilicate, and lithium disilicate-strengthened aluminosilicate glass-ceramics. The results showed that zirconia had the highest mechanical performance, while lithium disilicate-strengthened aluminosilicate glass-ceramic had the lowest. Aging significantly decreased the strength of lithium disilicate and lithium disilicate-strengthened aluminosilicate glass-ceramic.

Enhanced bioactivity and low temperature degradation resistance of yttria stabilized zirconia/clay composites for dental applications

Yigithan Tufan et al.

Summary: In this study, YSZ/clay composites were produced to improve the osseointegration and low temperature degradation of YSZ implants. The addition of 4 wt% clay significantly enhanced bone cell proliferation, spreading, and functions. The composites have the potential to be used as an alternative material in dental applications.

Experimental and numerical investigation of heat generation and surface integrity of ZrO2 bioceramics in grinding process under MQL condition

Mohammad Bayat et al.

Summary: Zirconia bioceramics has great potential in medical applications due to its biocompatibility and high mechanical properties. This research investigates the impact of various grinding parameters on heat generation and surface morphology, using a diamond wheel. The study reveals that cutting depth has the greatest impact on temperature and force, followed by feed-rate, while wheel speed has the least effect. Moreover, the combination of minimal quantity lubrication (MQL) and low cutting depth effectively reduces surface roughness and defects formation.

Structure and fracture behavior of ion-beam-modified SiC-Al2O3-ZrO2 ceramic composites

Jianlong Chai et al.

Summary: In this study, SiC-Al2O3-ZrO2 ceramic composite with heterointerfaces was irradiated with Si ions and its microstructural evolution and mechanical properties were investigated. The phase transformation of zirconia was found to be associated with the size of oxygen vacancy clusters and displacement cascades. SiC particles underwent complete amorphization and a collection band was formed at high damage levels. The nanohardness and elastic modulus decreased with increasing damage level.
