Neoepitope fragments as biomarkers for different phenotypes of intervertebral disc degeneration

Shangbin Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial and temporal changes of aggrecan and collagen neoepitopes during intervertebral disc degeneration. The results show that different degeneration types are associated with specific neoepitope expression profiles, which may serve as biomarkers for early disc degeneration and indicators of different degeneration phenotypes.

Toward the Next Generation of Spine Bioreactors: Validation of an Ex Vivo Intervertebral Disc Organ Model and Customized Specimen Holder for Multiaxial Loading

Amra Secerovic et al.

Summary: A new generation of bioreactors with integrated six degrees of freedom (6 DOF) has been developed to mimic the natural load on intervertebral discs (IVD) more accurately. The study successfully developed and validated a specimen holder and corresponding ex vivo IVD organ model that met the requirements for multiaxial loading and long-term IVD culture. The study demonstrated that the developed holding system is mechanically reliable and biologically compatible for application in a new generation of multiaxial bioreactors.

In vivo intervertebral disc deformation: intratissue strain patterns within adjacent discs during flexion-extension

Robert L. Wilson et al.

Summary: This study utilized MRI technology and cyclic motion of the cervical spine to measure the displacement and strain patterns in adjacent intervertebral discs in vivo. The research found that different regions of the discs exhibit varying strain levels, which cannot be observed using traditional techniques.

A Robust Multiscale and Multiphasic Structure-Based Modeling Framework for the Intervertebral Disc

Minhao Zhou et al.

Summary: A structure-based bovine caudal disc model was developed and validated, evaluating multiscale and multiphasic intervertebral disc mechanics under different loading conditions and with degeneration. The model accurately predicted multiscale disc responses in most cases, demonstrating the effectiveness and robustness of the multiscale structure-based modeling-validation framework. The model also highlighted the rim as a weak link for disc failure, emphasizing the importance of keeping the cartilage endplate intact when evaluating disc failure mechanisms in vitro.

Sensitivity of Intervertebral Disc Finite Element Models to Internal Geometric and Non-geometric Parameters

Yuekang Du et al.

Summary: Finite element models are used to investigate internal intervertebral disc behaviors, showing that complex geometries lead to stiffer models. Sensitivity to material properties and modeling approaches were also observed, emphasizing the importance of realistic geometries for accurate load distribution through IVDs.
