Efficient continuous dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in ternary solvent system

Pengru Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, an efficient flow-through system was developed for continuous production of HMF, and the reaction variables were comprehensively investigated. High selectivity and yield of HMF were achieved using a H2O/dioxane/methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) ternary solvent system and Amberlyst 70 catalyst. The addition of dioxane enhanced the interactions between fructose, water, and cosolvent, while in-situ extraction by MIBK protected HMF from unfavorable side reactions. The method also showed promising selectivity for fructose dehydration from fructose-glucose mixtures, with potential for industrial applications.

Comprehensive Study on Kinetic Modeling of Liquid-Phase Selective Oxidation Using Au-Supported Catalysts for Efficient Production of Value-Added Chemicals from Glycerol

Atsushi Takahashi et al.

Summary: A novel kinetic model was developed for the liquid-phase selective oxidation of glycerol over Au-supported catalysts. The model considers reactions in the bulk liquid phase, formation of reactive oxygen species on Au metal and support, and three reactions of different oxygen species. It enables optimization of reaction conditions and prediction of oxidation behavior, making it a useful tool for catalyst design and biomass conversion reaction conditions.

Continuous production of glyceric acid and lactic acid by catalytic oxidation of glycerol over an Au-Pt/Al2O3 bimetallic catalyst using a liquid-phase flow reactor

Naoki Mimura et al.

Summary: In this study, a bimetallic catalyst of Au-Pt/Al2O3 was prepared for the production of high-value carboxylic acids from glycerol. The catalyst showed high conversion efficiency, but exhibited an induction period and deactivation during the long-term catalytic activity test using a liquid-phase flow reactor. The scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy characterization revealed that nanosized Au and Pt species were well dispersed on the catalyst support.

A review on biofuels for light-duty vehicles in Europe

S. Puricelli et al.

Summary: The European transport sector is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and biofuels are being explored as a way to reduce these emissions. In 2017, biofuels accounted for 4.5% of energy consumption in road transport and non-road mobile machinery, with biodiesel being the most consumed biofuel at 62% in the EU. Several studies have shown that biofuels generally have lower climate change impacts compared to diesel and petrol, with different types of biofuels offering varying levels of emission savings. Land use change effects are an important consideration, with the need to focus on non-edible feedstocks, waste, and by-products to minimize risks associated with land use change. European legislation is also working towards promoting the use of these more sustainable biofuel sources.

Bimetallic Au-Pd nanoparticles supported on silica with a tunable core@shell structure: enhanced catalytic activity of Pd(core)-Au(shell) over Au(core)-Pd(shell)

Gauravjyoti D. Kalita et al.

Summary: A facile ligand-assisted approach was used to synthesize bimetallic Au-Pd nanoparticles with a tunable core@shell structure. The Au-Pd materials exhibited superior performance in two important reactions, with the Pd-core-Au-shell structure showing higher activity compared to the Au-core-Pd-shell structure.
