The Effect of High-Intensity Interval Training Type on Body Fat Percentage, Fat and Fat-Free Mass: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials

Fatemeh Khodadadi et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effects of different types of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on body composition changes. The results showed that HIIT, particularly cycling-based HIIT, led to reductions in fat mass and body fat percentage, as well as increased fat-free mass. These findings suggest that cycling-based HIIT may be the most effective for improving body composition.

Energy deficiency impairs resistance training gains in lean mass but not strength: A meta-analysis and meta-regression

Chaise Murphy et al.

Summary: Short-term energy deficits have negative effects on anabolic hormones and muscle protein synthesis, while prolonged energy deficits can impair muscle mass gains. It is recommended that individuals aiming to increase muscle mass through resistance training avoid prolonged energy deficits, and those looking to preserve muscle mass during weight loss should keep energy deficits below 500 kcal/day.

Evaluating the Effects of Increased Protein Intake on Muscle Strength, Hypertrophy and Power Adaptations with Concurrent Training: A Narrative Review

Summary: Increasing protein intake can enhance muscle synthesis and increase lean mass, but does not further improve strength adaptations. Protein intake exceeding twice the recommended amount does not rescue decrements in muscle strength and power production with concurrent training.

Auto-regulatory progressive training compared to linear programming on muscular strength, endurance, and body composition in recreationally active males

Hamid Ghobadi et al.

Summary: The study found that both auto-regulatory progressive resistance exercise (APRE) and linear programming resistance exercise (LPRE) were effective at improving anaerobic power and skeletal muscle mass. However, APRE was more effective at improving lower body muscular strength in recreationally active males.

Concurrent Training Programming: The Acute Effects of Sprint Interval Exercise on the Subsequent Strength Training

Bertrand Mathieu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of different exercise modalities on concurrent training. The results showed that cycling or running sprint interval exercise did not affect the quality of resistance training sessions. However, the running group reported higher perceived exertion and lower subjective wellbeing. Therefore, cycling exercises may be more suitable for sprint interval training during concurrent training programs.

Muscle Protein Synthesis Responses Following Aerobic-Based Exercise or High-Intensity Interval Training with or Without Protein Ingestion: A Systematic Review

Reza Bagheri et al.

Summary: This systematic review investigated the effects of aerobic exercise and high-intensity interval training on post-exercise muscle protein synthesis (MPS). The results showed that most studies reported significant increases in MPS following aerobic exercise and HIIT, particularly for mixed and myofibrillar protein synthesis. However, there was no further increase in MPS after protein ingestion for mitochondrial protein synthesis.

Interference Phenomenon with Concurrent Strength and High-Intensity Interval Training-Based Aerobic Training: An Updated Model

Felipe C. Vechin et al.

Summary: Previous research has shown that concurrent training (CT) may reduce muscle strength and mass gains induced by resistance training (RT), but very intense high-intensity interval training (HIIT) protocols can minimize the interference effect. When performing CT, implementing very intense HIIT protocols is recommended to avoid the interference effect on muscle strength and mass.
