The effect of acute manipulation of carbohydrate availability on high intensity running performance, running economy, critical speed, and substrate metabolism in trained Male runners

Andrius Ramonas et al.

Summary: Low carbohydrate availability does not affect high intensity exercise performance, running economy, critical speed, and substrate metabolism. However, some athletes perform better in low carbohydrate conditions and have higher fat oxidation.

The Effect of Carbohydrate Intake on Strength and Resistance Training Performance: A Systematic Review

Menno Henselmans et al.

Summary: The effect of carbohydrate intake on strength training performance has not been systematically analyzed. Acute supplementation and short-term manipulation did not show beneficial effects, while long-term manipulation had inconsistent results. Carbohydrate intake has minimal impact on workouts consisting of up to 10 sets per muscle group, but may benefit performance during higher intensity workouts. More research is needed for further validation.

Physical loading in professional soccer players: Implications for contemporary guidelines to encompass carbohydrate periodization

Liam Anderson et al.

Summary: Despite decades of research, the quantification of training loads for adult male professional soccer players is relatively recent. Training loads are influenced by various factors, including season phase, position, game frequency, starting status, training goals, and coaching philosophy. Macronutrient perspective suggests that the periodization of physical loading and carbohydrate (CHO) intake has implications for the players' requirements. The concept of CHO periodization is gaining popularity, where intake is adjusted based on fuel demands and training goals.

Muscle metabolism and impaired sprint performance in an elite women's football game

Peter Krustrup et al.

Summary: The study investigated skeletal muscle metabolism and repeated sprint performance changes in elite female football players during match play. The results showed marked glycogen depletion in both fiber types at the end of the match, potentially explaining fatigue. Repeated sprint ability decreased after intense periods in both halves, possibly due to muscle metabolite perturbations.

Feasibility and usability of GPS data in exploring associations between training load and running-related knee injuries in recreational runners

Kyra L. A. Cloosterman et al.

Summary: This study explored the feasibility of collecting GPS data and the usability of GPS data to evaluate associations between training load and onset of running-related knee injuries (RRKIs). The results demonstrated that it is possible to collect GPS data from GPS-enabled devices and platforms used by recreational runners, and that this data can be used to calculate weekly Acute:Chronic Workload Ratios (ACWRs) to evaluate the associations between training load and onset of RRKIs.

The Role of Muscle Glycogen Content and Localization in High-Intensity Exercise Performance: A Placebo-Controlled Trial

Jeppe F. Vigh-Larsen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between muscle glycogen content and localization and high-intensity exercise performance. The results showed that changes in muscle glycogen levels can affect high-intensity exercise performance, especially at the single-fiber and subcellular levels. Additionally, carbohydrate intake also influences ratings of perceived exertion and repeated sprint ability.

Muscle Glycogen in Elite Soccer - A Perspective on the Implication for Performance, Fatigue, and Recovery

Magni Mohr et al.

Summary: Based on extrapolation of current trends, the physical demands of soccer will continue to increase, leading to increased fatigue during and between games. Soccer is a high-intensity intermittent activity that depletes muscle glycogen, which is associated with late-game fatigue and recovery. Low muscle glycogen levels can negatively impact muscle function and contribute to fatigue. The slow recovery process in modern elite soccer, with its increased game and training frequency, highlights the importance of prioritizing fitness training, nutrition, and recovery strategies that optimize muscle glycogen storage. The soccer community, including governing bodies, must acknowledge and plan for the high demands of the modern game to optimize performance and player health.

Performance effects of periodized carbohydrate restriction in endurance trained athletes - a systematic review and meta-analysis

Kasper Degn Gejl et al.

Summary: Endurance athletes typically consume carbohydrate-rich diets for optimal performance, but low muscle glycogen during training or recovery can stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis and metabolic adaptations. Periodized CHO restriction may not enhance performance in highly adapted endurance athletes, as suggested by training studies with limited CHO availability.
