Apatite and garnet stability in the Al-Ca-Mg-Si-(Gd/Y/Yb)-O systems and implications for T/EBC: CMAS reactions

Eeshani Godbole et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of rare earth ion radius on the stability and extent of the garnet solid solution phase. Results show a reduction in stability of silicate garnet with increasing rare earth ion radius. Different rare earth systems exhibit varied phases formation, but the extent of the garnet solid solution only slightly increases compared to apatite stability.

Protocol for selecting exemplary silicate deposit compositions for evaluating thermal and environmental barrier coatings

Andrew R. Ericks et al.

Summary: This study presents a protocol for selecting representative silicate compositions for comparative testing of gas turbine coating materials. The protocol involves converting compositions of engine deposits and naturally occurring siliceous debris into the five major oxides and further refining them using principal component analysis and k-means clustering. The process results in four classes of possible deposits with common chemical characteristics. Key thermophysical properties of these deposits are calculated and related to the glass network connectivity. Finally, the reactions of deposits from each class with typical thermal and environmental barrier oxides are compared, considering the composition variations within each deposit class.

Enhanced calcium-magnesium-aluminosilicate (CMAS) resistance of GdAlO3 (GAP) for composite thermal barrier coatings

Michael P. Schmitt et al.

Summary: This study compares the behavior of GZO and GAP materials in relation to CMAS degradation. The results show that GAP dissolves slower than GZO while producing an equivalent or higher amount of pore blocking apatite. GAP also induces intrinsic crystallization of the CMAS into a gehlenite phase. Moreover, GAP exhibits a thinner reaction zone and less sensitivity to CMAS loading compared to GZO, suggesting its potential as a CMAS barrier material and inclusion into composite TBCs.

Quantitative WDS compositional mapping using the electron microprobe

John J. Donovan et al.

Summary: The article discusses the quantification of X-ray intensity maps at the pixel level to improve accuracy, precision, and mapping throughput in electron-probe microanalysis (EPMA). The methods proposed for rigorous pixel quantification require calibration of X-ray intensities and result in significantly better accuracy compared to manual calibration curve methods.

Rheological and chemical interaction between volcanic ash and thermal barrier coatings

Dirk Muller et al.

Summary: Combustion temperatures in gas turbines soften and melt volcanic ash particles, while lower temperatures lead to deposition on turbine blades. The intensity of interaction depends on chemistry and structure. Studying spreading behavior on different TBCs, the highest damage potential is from interaction with basaltic melt.

Comparative study of EB-PVD gadolinium-zirconate and yttria-rich zirconia coatings performance against Fe-containing calcium-magnesium-aluminosilicate (CMAS) infiltration

Juan J. Gomez Chavez et al.

Summary: This study compares the CMAS infiltration resistance of GZO and 65YZ coatings produced by EB-PVD, finding that 65YZ has higher resistance and forms a thinner reaction layer due to a synergetic reaction mechanism. The formation of apatite in GZO requires more rare-earth content, leading to higher consumption of the GZO layer compared to 65YZ. The microstructural differences in the coatings may also affect the infiltration resistance and reaction kinetics.
