Hydrogen production by methane pyrolysis in molten binary copper alloys

David Scheiblehner et al.

Summary: The utilization of hydrogen as an energy carrier and reduction agent is crucial for a sustainable future, and steam reforming of methane is the primary method for hydrogen production. However, it generates carbon dioxide as a byproduct. Methane pyrolysis offers a carbon dioxide-free alternative, producing solid carbon along with hydrogen. This study investigates different molten copper alloys as catalytic media for methane pyrolysis, demonstrating their influence on methane conversion rate and carbon properties. Optimizing these parameters is essential for achieving economic competitiveness.

Effects of the Electrodes' Shape and Graphite Quality on the Arc Stability During Hydrogen Plasma Smelting Reduction of Iron Ores

Daniel Ernst et al.

Summary: Reducing greenhouse gases, especially CO2, is essential for addressing climate change. The European steel industry is responsible for 5.7% of the total EU emissions and needs to reduce its GHG emissions. Hydrogen plasma smelting reduction is a promising technology that can eliminate CO2 emissions by directly reducing iron ore to steel in one step. Experiments were conducted to study the impact of graphite quality, tip geometry, and electrode gap on arc stability. The results were evaluated to determine stable process parameters and create stability maps and fields.

The Behavior of Direct Reduced Iron in the Electric Arc Furnace Hotspot

Andreas Pfeiffer et al.

Summary: Hydrogen-based direct reduction is a promising technology for CO2 lean steelmaking, with the electric arc furnace being the most relevant equipment for processing direct reduced iron (DRI). The behavior of DRI in the arc area is of great interest. Laboratory-scale experiments were conducted using a hydrogen plasma smelting reduction (HPSR) reactor under inert conditions. The results showed that carburized DRI is preferable, and the addition of slag-forming oxides in the arc has a mixing effect.

Magnesium-Modified Co3O4 Catalyst with Remarkable Performance for Toluene Low Temperature Deep Oxidation

Abraham Atour Zigla et al.

Summary: Co3O4, MgCo2O4, and MgO materials were synthesized using a co-precipitation approach and characterized. Among these materials, spinel MgCo2O4 exhibited the highest activity in the total conversion of toluene to CO2 and H2O. It achieved almost 100% oxidation of toluene at 255 degrees C. This superior activity can be attributed to its larger surface area, higher oxygen absorption, more oxygen vacancies, and better redox capability compared to single metal oxides.

Increasing the peripheral opening extent hinders the pre-reduction and pre-heating roles of shaft-injected hydrogen, but improves the CO indirect reduction rate. Increasing the shaft-injected hydrogen flow rate slows down the CO indirect reduction rate but enhances the H-2 indirect reduction rate.
