Effect of the Y2O3 amount on the oxidation behavior of ZrB2-SiC-based coatings for carbon/carbon composites

Hao Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of Y2O3 addition on the oxidation resistance of ZrB2-SiC-Y2O3 coating on SiC coated carbon/carbon composites. The results show that adding Y2O3 greatly enhances the oxidation-resistant properties of the coating, leading to the formation of a dense structure and yttria stabilized zirconia, Y2Si2O7, t-ZrO2 phases. The improved oxidation resistance is attributed to the formation of a Zr-Si-Y-O glass barrier layer, reduced m-ZrO2 content, and the presence of Y2Si2O7 as a pinning phase.

???????Ablation behavior and mechanisms of Cf/(Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)C-SiC high-entropy ceramic matrix composites

Feiyan Cai et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the air plasma ablation behavior of C-f/(Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)C-SiC high-entropy ceramic matrix composites under high-temperature hypersonic conditions. The results showed that the composites exhibited excellent ablation resistance with a stable and dense oxide layer formed on the sample surface. The multiphase oxides formed during ablation provided a stable and highly self-healing protective layer for the internal materials.

New insights on the ablation mechanism of silicon carbide in dissociated air plasmas

Lingwei Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ablation behaviors of SiC materials in re-entry environments using an inductively coupled plasma wind tunnel. New insights are obtained based on the analysis of surface characteristics, including the role of surface roughness on the critical ablation temperature and the 'from-point-to-surface' ablation process caused by surface roughness. The findings are important for optimizing the structures of SiC-based TPS in re-entry environments.

Long-term and cyclic ablation behavior of La2O3 modified Cf/ZrB2-SiC composites at 2500?

Bo-Wen Chen et al.

Summary: The research shows that the La2O3 modification affects the long-term and cyclic ablation behavior of Cf/ZrB2-SiC composites. The formation of a ZrO2-La2O3-SiO2 liquid phase layer at 2500 degrees C reduces mass recession rates, but with poor structural stability and weakening of ZrO2 pinning effect by La2O3. This leads to increased linear recession rates with higher La2O3 content during cyclic ablation.

Ningning Yan et al.

Summary: Nose-shaped ZrC-C composites with gradient pore structure (ZrC-CGS) were successfully prepared using ZrC skeleton as preform, showing superior ablation and heat insulation performance. Compared with ZrC-C composites with dense structure, ZrC-CGS composites have a lower mass ablation rate, higher heat resistance capacity, and lower coefficients of thermal expansion.
