Suicide and Suicidality in Children and Adolescents with Chronic Skin Disorders: A Systematic Review

Summary: Suicide in young children is rare and becomes more prevalent towards the end of adolescence. Skin disorders, such as acne and psoriasis, are associated with a high prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities. However, there is limited research on suicidal behavior in adolescents and children with chronic skin disorders. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of suicidal behavior in this population and identify contributing risk factors. Five studies were included, revealing a wide range of prevalence rates for suicidal ideation and attempts. The risk remained significant even after adjusting for depression, suggesting alternative mechanisms.

Body dysmorphia in common skin diseases: results of an observational, cross-sectional multicentre study among dermatological outpatients in 17 European countries

Summary: This study found that BDD symptoms were fivefold more prevalent in dermatological patients than in healthy skin controls, and were associated with young age, female sex, psychological stress, and feelings of stigmatization. Certain patient groups had a significantly higher chance of BDD symptoms compared with controls. Doctors should consider BDD more often in patients with dermatological conditions and refer them when necessary for assessment and treatment.

Summary: Chronic itch is a complex psychophysiological sensation that significantly affects the quality of life in patients with atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Patients with chronic itch often experience sleep disorders, irritability, and nervous system depletion, leading to disruptions in social relationships and mental health. Psychological interventions can positively impact the mechanisms of itch and scratching and improve social functioning. Among these interventions, family constellation seminars have been found to be effective in reducing itch intensity, improving sleep, and performance.
