Evaluation of a Yeast-Polypyrrole Biocomposite Used in Microbial Fuel Cells

Antanas Zinovicius et al.

Summary: Electrically conductive polymers have potential applications in charge transfer from living cells to electrochemical biosensors and biofuel cells. Modification of living cells by polypyrrole (PPy) reduces cell lifespan, burdens replication, and diminishes renewability. The study evaluated the viability and morphology of non-modified, inactivated, and PPy-modified yeast cells, showing a reduction in cell size, increased roughness, and the formation of polymer clusters with higher pyrrole concentrations. A microbial fuel cell (MFC) designed with yeast modified by a 0.05 M pyrrole solution generated 8.32 mW/m(2) more power than the MFC based on non-modified yeast. However, higher concentrations of PPy caused cytotoxic effects and reduced charge transfer efficiency.

Recovery of microbial fuel cells with high COD molasses wastewater and analysis of the microbial community

Juntao Yang et al.

Summary: The double-chamber microbial fuel cell shows effective treatment of molasses wastewater, but performance declines with increasing influent concentration due to accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and low pH. However, the MFC exhibits strong self-recovery capability, able to regain high efficiency after a certain period of time.

Three-dimensional ZIF-67 attached lamellar Ti3AlC2 combined with ZnAl-LDH as cathode catalyst for enhancing oxygen reduction reaction of microbial fuel cells

Junfeng Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple hydrothermal method was used to prepare the cathode catalyst of microbial fuel cells. The composite material of ZIF-67 attached to the lamellar Ti3AlC2/ZnAl-LDH showed significant peaks and had a relatively uniform distribution of elements on its surface. The ZIF-67@Ti3AlC2/ZnAl-LDH-MFC exhibited a higher maximum voltage and power density compared to other MFCs, indicating improved performance. The combination of Ti3AlC2 with ZnAl-LDH and the addition of ZIF-67 enhanced the reaction center and activity of the composite material, leading to better oxygen reduction reaction and MFC performance.

In situ growth of MnO2 on pDA-templated cotton fabric for degradation of formaldehyde

Yali Zhang et al.

Summary: This study developed a method to degrade formaldehyde in interior decoration by in situ growing manganese dioxide nanoparticles (MnO2 NPs) on cotton fabrics using polydopamine as a template. The results showed that the developed cotton/pDA/MnO2 fabrics exhibited good stability and could remove 100% of formaldehyde within 20 minutes after three cycles. The development of MnO2 NPs coated fabrics provides a new strategy for the degradation of formaldehyde in interior decoration.

Combined TPR, XRD, and FTIR studies on the reduction behavior of Co3O4

Abdallah I. M. Rabee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chemical composition, structure, thermal stability, topo-chemical interactivity, and reduction behavior of cobalt oxides (Co3O4, CoO, and Co2O3). The results showed that Co3O4 had a stable crystalline structure and underwent deoxygenation and oxygenation processes in different atmospheres. The reduction of Co3O4 involved five events, including the removal of surface oxygen species and the formation of CoO. The study also found that reduction variables had a significant impact on the temperature range and rate of reduction events.
