Brain iron deposition is positively correlated with cognitive impairment in patients with chronic cerebral hypoperfusion: a MRI susceptibility mapping study

J. -J. Yu et al.

Summary: The relationship between brain iron deposition and cognitive impairment in patients with chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CHP) was investigated. The study used quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) to detect brain iron deposition and employed neuropsychological tests to assess cognitive function. The results showed that CHP patients had higher susceptibility values in the bilateral hippocampus and substantia nigra, as well as cognitive impairment. Furthermore, the susceptibility values in specific areas were closely correlated with the scores of neuropsychological tests.

Association between susceptibility value and cerebral blood flow in the bilateral putamen in patients undergoing hemodialysis

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: Hemodialysis may lead to brain injuries, and ferritin level may play a key role in the alteration of cerebral blood flow and iron deposition. The putamen in patients undergoing HD showed iron dyshomeostasis and vascular damage, which could be potential neural mechanisms for neurodegenerative processes.

Iron Dyshomeostasis and Ferroptosis: A New Alzheimer's Disease Hypothesis?

Feixue Wang et al.

Summary: Iron plays a crucial role in the human body, but its accumulation in the brain is associated with cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease. Abnormal iron metabolism leads to iron deposition and promotes the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Furthermore, iron deposition can trigger iron-mediated cell death and result in neuronal loss. Therefore, targeting iron metabolism could be a promising therapeutic approach for Alzheimer's disease.

Summary: This study characterized the regional homogeneity (ReHo) and amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF) in abnormal brain regions of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The findings suggest that abnormal activity in basal ganglia, cerebellar, and hippocampal regions may be involved in the cognitive decline of CKD patients.

Diffusion tensor imaging of the brain white matter microstructure in patients with chronic kidney disease and its correlation with cognition

Chaoyang Zhang et al.

Summary: Neurological damage is commonly observed in individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and this is associated with microstructural damage to the brain white matter and cognitive dysfunction. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between cognitive impairment and diffusion parameters obtained from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of abnormal white matter tracts in CKD patients. The results showed extensive white matter microstructural changes and impaired cognitive function in CKD patients, with worse cognitive function and more severe microstructural damage in dialysis-dependent CKD patients compared to non-dialysis-dependent CKD patients.
